Tuesday touts Sablefish, in our opinion, has the most melt-in-the mouth, buttery texture of all things that swim for a living. For most of my life, I only found it in places like Hong Kong, Singapore and Monterrey Park, where rich Asians pay top dollar for it. Now it pops up in Des Moines at Proudfoot & Bird, Oak Park, Waterfront and Harbinger on occasions. Last week it was the Wednesday special at Waterfront. I arrived at 5 p.m., and, by 5:45 p.m., my waitress was lamenting that it was so popular there might be none leftover for staff dinners. By 6:15 p.m., the market section of the store told me they could not sell me any because the kitchen had commandeered their supply. I think it's catching on in Des Moines.
Umbrella's wonder bargain of the week - Fareway's Wednesday only rotisserie chickens cost $5. You can not buy a raw chicken that cheaply. Yes, we know Sam's Club and Costco offer $5 chickens but those are dues-paying clubs and not as ubiquitous in Iowa as Fareway.
