Good morning to you!

I have often said that the fewer times people can have their bodies cut into throughout their lifetimes, the better. That’s not a knock on surgeons, as they save a lot of lives and solve a lot of problems. But surgeries are not a walk in the park for the people being operated on. For most, the recovery process is simply awful. Fortunately, we typically forget about the pain months later.

I had a surgery last week. It was on my shoulder, which was bad. But it was my left shoulder, which, for a right-handed person, was good. I am dealing with the typical aches and pains associated with a rotator cuff repair, the reattachment of a bicep tendon and a third process I can’t pronounce. As far as surgeries go, mine were “easy peasy.” Those were the surgeon’s words, not mine. Admittedly, I am enjoying the pain killers a bit more than I should, and that ice-circulating machine does wonders, too. I thought the machine was just another money grab in the process, but it really does work. And, I am convinced that I can somehow make margaritas with it, too.

Sleeping, of course, hasn’t been easy. The living room recliner has been my bed, for the most part. Sleep a little. Eat a little. Work a little. Rinse and repeat. That’s been my routine for the past few days.

My wife, of course, has been a savior. I can’t imagine functioning through this recovery without her. And I owe many thanks to our staff members who have taken on some of my tasks and dealt with my slower pace on the ones I am continuing to do.

So, how does a 57-year-old man tear up his shoulder? A specific injury? Wear and tear? I wish I knew. Fortunately, I am not pouring concrete or moving cattle or shingling houses. Typing, editing and proofing isn’t easy with one arm, but, in the big scheme of things, it’s manageable.

Back to the fewer-surgeries-are-better idea. Ultimately, I learned that my rotator cuff would not heal on its own. So, I had to decide if I wanted to deal with the many instances of daily pain for the rest of my life or deal with a few months of recovery pain. In this situation, I chose the latter. Right now, I am questioning that decision, but I have no doubt it will get better each day.

Easy peasy, right?

Meanwhile, please forgive the additional errors you may find in this column.

Have a memorable Monday, and, as always, I thank you for reading.

Back to the Biz
The legendary Waldorf Astoria hotel reopens this week after a makeover that expanded from 3 to 8 years while costs rose to $6 billion, counting the $1.95 billion that Chinese insurance tycoon Wu Xiaohui paid Hilton for the property 11 years ago. In the meanwhile, Wu went to prison, and the Chinese government took over the hotel and all its ballooning costs. At various points, the formerly 1,400-room hotel was the New York home of Frank Sinatra, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and the Duke of Windsor after he abdicated his throne to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson. F. Scott Fitzgerald and Dorothy Parker wrote fondly about it. Now it has 375 hotel rooms and 372 condominiums. A basic king deluxe hotel room starts at $1,500/night. Only about a tenth of its condo units have sold as New York City’s high end housing market has crashed after years of rising taxes and crime problems. Hotel owners are reportedly OK with the costs and losses as their intention is to use the hotel to lure future builders away from Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Peninsula and Ritz Carlton to the Waldorf brand.

The legendarily successful Chick-fil-A is about to open its first downtown venue in Des Moines — in the Local Bites food court of the Greater Des Moines Partnership Building at 700 Locust. That means that the anchors of a place called "Local Bites" will be the world's biggest ethnic restaurant chain (Panda Express) and the nation's most successful chain (in per store earnings). A couple decades ago, it looked like downtown might never see a chain restaurant and the western suburbs might never see anything but big chains. Now all the metro is a melting pot of the two.

Full Court Press is Des Moines' magnificent designer of restaurants that transport customers to another time or place: Hessen Haus, Royal Mile, Mullets, Fong's Pizza and Tiki Bar, High Life Lounge, etc. They will launch their latest joint Thursday. The Empire intends to recreate a short-lived place of the same name from 1905.

Room for improvement
Residents share their home renovation experiences.

By Rachel Harrington

Live in a home for a while, and one is likely to start thinking, “If only….” If only the bathroom had a walk-in shower…. If only the kitchen had new cabinets.… If only the old flooring could be replaced.… If only the basement was finished…. If only a room could be added…. If only that longed-for home improvement project could be completed … then the house would be just right. Residents who have taken the leap from thinking about it to tackling their dream projects share their experiences.

From a small plan to a big project
For Christine Bissinger and her husband, Peter, their renovation project started small and soon grew larger.

“Our original plan was to renovate the kitchen and primary bath, but this turned into a makeover of our entire main level,” Christine says.

And the Bissingers are still not done. ...
