Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“A few quotes for you (Significant, lasting contributions, Sept. 16, 2025): ‘Old newspaper men don't die, they stand on more soapboxes than they used to (Unattributed).’ ‘A newspaper is not just for reporting the news as it is, but to make people mad enough to do something about it (Mark Twain). ‘Life really does begin at 40. Up until then, you are just doing research (Carl Jung).” - Rex

I am still doing research, and, hopefully, always will be. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. Congratulations on receiving the Distinguished Service Award at the ACP conference (Significant, lasting contributions, Sept. 16, 2025)! What an amazing and well-earned honor. Your dedication and service to the industry make a real difference, and I’m so glad to see you recognized.” - Lee

Thank you, Lee. Those $2 bills have brought good blessings! - Shane

“There’s another reason for wearing undershirts (Undershirts are here!, Sept. 17, 2025). Those of us who served in the military always had to wear undershirts, the short-sleeved T-shirt variety. If you were wearing a dress uniform, it was white. When you wore fatigues (today’s BDUs) it was usually OD. That was among the many habits drilled into you in basic training.” - Bill

That discipline carries through life in more important ways than just undershirts — but it all works together. Thank you for your service, Bill. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. A friend of mine shares your daily emails. I can tell you that I believe I have enjoyed every column you have written. Today’s really hit home (Improving, Sept. 23, 2025). In a sales game, each day we are all challenged to bring an A Game because, if we don’t, our competitors will. I was not an athlete. Was usually the last one picked, but I didn’t care. I just liked to compete. I have been meaning to write for a long time to thank you so much for your daily updates.” - Rick

There’s no need to rely on your friend for the Daily Umbrella. You can get your own by signing up here. Thank you for the kind words, Rick. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Redfish speak with forked tails. Fishers of redfish from New England to the Gulf of Mexico have been catching hundreds of them with clear markings on their tails. Often, these are letters of the alphabet, heart shaped spots and numbers. But one guy caught one looking like Edgar Allen Poe, another with an extended middle finger. Scientists say whatever their shape, the spots serve a protective purpose “as false eyes that cause predators to mistake the head for the tail.” (WSJ)

The price of nonalcoholic beverages, which include soda, coffee, tea, juice and milk, increased by 4.4% from June 2024 to June 2025. Room for improvement
Residents share their home renovation experiences.

If only the kitchen had new cabinets.… If only the old flooring could be replaced.… If only the basement was finished…. If only a room could be added…. If only that longed-for home improvement project could be completed … then the house would be just right. Residents who have taken the leap from thinking about it to tackling their dream projects share their experiences.
