Good morning to you!

When my big brother, Steve, and I were kids, he liked to tear things apart so he could understand how they worked. He still does. It’s an innate thing with him. He would take apart toys and clocks and lawn mowers and motorcycles. And, sometimes, he would even put them back together.

Our basement was a laboratory of sorts for Steve. And so was our garage. Mom would demand he clean both areas up from time to time, but he couldn’t wait to start on yet another endeavor. At any given time, he could have five or six projects in various stages of repair or disrepair. To this day, I don’t know how he kept them all separated.

I didn’t understand my brother’s obsession with this when we were kids, especially when it was my stuff he was taking apart. It was maddening for me. But, today, I get it. In fact, I am fascinated by it — not because it has spurred me to wonder how things work. Far from it. I simply appreciate the mindset and curiosity and courage some people like my brother have to tackle such things.

I, on the other hand, could not care less about how things work. I simply want them to work. After all, the brain can only hold so much information, and mine is filled with things like the theme song from "Gilligan's Island."

I really don’t care how a gasoline engine works. I just want my truck to start.

I don’t understand how sound can travel through the air. I simply need to be able to call and text on my cell phone.

And how energy is stored? I have no clue. And I don’t have any desire to learn.

Maybe, someday, I will be interested in such things. But, probably not. Because when I am at wits end on how to repair my lawn mower, I call Steve. He usually has the fix. If he doesn't, I grab my checkbook and reach out to the professionals for help. Because, as cheap as I am, I appreciate having things fixed right with little or no time required from me.

Meanwhile, I am trying to learn how to do some basic maintenance on my own toys, but my obsessive-compulsive traits won’t allow me to leave parts strewn across my garage floor. And, when I do get the occasional itch to tinker around with such things, it gives me a good reason to see my brother.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

 Woebegone Wednesday
America saw two of its most famous examples of marketing low prices lose their long-held status as world champions. The same Chinese company dethroned both McDonalds and Costco in each case. Mixue Ice Cream & Tea (pronounced ME-schway) passed Big Mac as world's largest restaurant by store locations; then it beat out Costco by selling more "loss leader" products than the American company's "$1.50 kosher hot dog and soft drink." Mixue did it with their 40 cents ice cream cone. (It costs a bit more in wealthy Singapore.) Though Mixue calls the cone its signature item, it makes its money selling soft drinks — more than seven billion last year. Those typically cost about a dollar.

Those of you who bet the celebrity marriage of clean shaven James L Kraft and Henry J Heinz of the gargantuan mustache would not last 10 years lost, but barely. The Kraft Heinz company announced recently that they were splitting up after 10 years and two months. Cheese and pickles are going their separate ways. As usual, it will be the offspring that suffer. Psychologists will be provided for young burgers and hot dogs.

Room for improvement
Residents share their home renovation experiences.

By Ashley Rullestad

Live in a home for a while, and one is likely to start thinking, “If only….” If only the bathroom had a walk-in shower…. If only the kitchen had new cabinets.… If only the old flooring could be replaced.… If only the basement was finished…. If only a room could be added…. If only that longed-for home improvement project could be completed … then the house would be just right. Residents who have taken the leap from thinking about it to tackling their dream projects share their experiences.

Major overhaul
Dave and Amy Curtis’ house on Winwood Drive was built in 1989, and they moved into it in August 2000. After 25 years — and as empty nesters now — the couple was trying to decide if they should downsize and move or remodel and update.

“We love our neighborhood and the mature trees and chose to take on the remodel project,” Amy says. “Our challenge was finding a contractor who would be willing to work with us knowing my husband wanted to do a lot of the work.” ...
