Good morning to you!

“It’s just a big jigsaw puzzle.”

Those were the words Ed Rood shared with me in 1997 when we were working on the pages of The Tri-County Times at our office in Slater. Ed was the longtime publisher of the weekly newspaper that covered 10 communities and three school districts in portions of Story, Polk and Boone Counties. He had many skills — most notably being a wonderful nature photographer — but he was also a master of newspaper composition at the time.

Those were the days of waxing machines and Xacto knives and amberlith and border tape and rollers. Writing using the inverted pyramid was a must back then, as stories were physically cut from the bottom up to fit on those broadsheet pages, and you didn’t want the best part of your story in pieces on the production floor.

Ed was right. It really was a big jigsaw puzzle. And if a piece or two were missing — or showed up minutes before our press deadline — the real magic of stripping down the pages and re-pasting up came into play. It was frustrating, much like when you get down to the final pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and realize a few are missing.

The composition process was much more complicated at the time, but Ed reminded me of the days of linotype and how much easier it had become. Even so, he was itching to convert to computer pagination, which we did during the time we worked together.

I was reminded of this process recently when I heard Father Ray Higgins talk about how life is like a big jigsaw puzzle and how we need that image on the box cover to give us direction to put the 2,000 pieces together. Without it, we would be aimlessly trying to match pieces together, maybe getting a few to fit but, more than likely, giving up in frustration over this seemingly impossible task.

Father Ray was right, too. Life is like a jigsaw puzzle, and we do need help putting the pieces together. A plan. A guide. A path. A model. Trying to put it together on our own — like so many of us attempt to do — can be maddening, and that is likely why so many of us give up when times get tough.

Unfortunately, even if we have life’s puzzle box cover to give us direction, all of us still don't have the exact same puzzle pieces. But, that’s the wonderful challenge of jigsaw puzzles — and of this thing we call life, too.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

BUSINESS FEATURE
Defining a brand

By Tammy Pearson and Rachel Harrington

Making a good first impression is undoubtedly vital in job interviews, dinner with potential in-laws, and applying for a loan. However, when it comes to making a business a success, it is often the lasting impression that matters most. And that lasting impression is created through a company’s brand.

“A brand is a set of visual assets, stylistic choices, and other resources that combine to form a cohesive image,” according to Adobe For Business. The article, “Building a brand — a step-by-step guide,” offers suggestions on creating a brand and emphasizes, “A brand is more than a logo, name or slogan. It could include almost anything that contributes to your company’s reputation — like the tone used in your messaging or the dress code for your employees. The various ways you’re perceived by the public is your brand.”  ...
