Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I just wanted to drop a note to say thanks for all the columns over the years. I must say that this is one is my favorites (Not ready for the woodpile yet, July 8, 2025, Times Vedette), and I recently read it to my mom. She also thought it as ‘perfect’ as we both agree that we live in a ‘throw-away society.’ I do believe the next generation to age out of the workforce is going to restore a lot of items we have cherished over the years.” - Elizabeth

Well, I have some chairs they can work on. - Shane

“I was enjoying your article about the Adirondack chairs (Not ready for the woodpile yet, July 8, 2025, Times Vedette), until I came to this: ‘The vital boards needed replaced immediately.’ It gave me heartburn. ‘Needed to be replaced’ or ‘needed replacing’ would be correct. Thanks for reading.” - Cindy

Heartburn? Keep on reading. You may find a few more of my oops. - Shane

“Perfect (Mailbag, Aug. 14, 2025). The only thing they missed was Les Nessman talking about hanging his Silver Swine award on the imaginary wall in front of him. Now, remember for Thanksgiving, you can tell us all whether turkeys can fly!” - Brad

“The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement!” - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. You left out a sport not competed on the high school or collegiate area that doesn't have cheerleaders but does have a gigantic fan base — NASCAR (No soccer cheerleaders?, Aug. 20, 2025). As each lap goes by, the pep band could play a song with special meaning for the driver. ‘The Land Down Under’ for Shane Van Ginsberg. ‘Speedy Gonzales’ for Daniel Suarez. ‘Renegade” by Styx for Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch or Brad Keselowski. The dance team could work in a ‘Pit Stop’ routine. NASCAR is currently, due to its own foolish decisions, experiencing a loss in viewership and fans, but if they refuse to go back to the basics, this just might work.” - John

It might be a bit loud, but what the heck. I say you get this started. Grab the pom-poms. - Shane

“Shane, how about the ‘Tom Terrific’ and ‘Felix the Cat’ shows (Th-th-th-that’s all, folks, Aug. 25, 2025)? I remember them vividly. There were lots of others, but I won't mention them here and now.” - Scott

Felix really was a wonderful, wonderful cat. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

P.S. I stand corrected, as Facebook was actually correct about one thing: Adam Thielen is rejoining the Minnesota Vikings. To my knowledge, though, Sally Fields has not died, and President Donald Trump was not born in Pakistan.

The rebranding of Cracker Barrel, which we wrote about yesterday, is over. The company received so much backlash from their loyal customers that they nixed their bland new logo and went back to their traditional one. Now, Hooters is rebounding from bankruptcy with a $30 million rebranding campaign that will make the company “less risqué.” That was their entire brand. So, why rebrand a name which is itself risqué?

Mee Mochi is bringing chewy mochi doughnuts, soft serve and taiyaki — a fish-shaped waffle — to 772 Hickman Road. They are open till 9 p.m. because these doughnuts are not just for breakfast.

New laws took effect in July in Iowa that effect restaurants and customers. 1.) THC beverages are now treated like booze in transport. Driving with an open container is now criminal. Store the beverages in your trunk. 2.) It is now a felony-level crime to alter a gift card with intent to fraud.

FEATURE STORY
Seeking central Iowa’s ultimate BBQ

By Jim Duncan

Historically, Iowa has been barbecue challenged. Before refrigeration became common, the BBQ genre developed in the American South as the main method of preserving meat, seafood and poultry. In Iowa, ice was more expendable than hard wood, which was better used to heat homes. So, we built ice houses, and the South built smokehouses.

Because BBQ was a means to avoid waste, whole animal cooking dominated America’s original BBQ. Whole hog BBQ was so associated with southerners that the slang term “going whole hog” was coined by New Englander Daniel Webster in answer to a question about what he expected from a presidency of Tennessee’s Andrew Jackson. ...

Meet Katherine Hanson
For the joy of student growth

By Rachel Harrington

Just out of college, Katherine Hanson landed a job at Urbandale High School as a science teacher, primarily teaching chemistry. After several years, she was presented with the opportunity to become an instructional coach.
“I was excited about the opportunity to step into a role that meant collaborating with my colleagues and impacting more students throughout the school,” Hanson shares. “I loved the idea of working with teachers to develop new strategies and explore new ways of teaching students.”

Hanson has worked as an instructional coach for the last two years, and she is excited to begin her third year this month. As an instructional coach, her main objective is to support student learning by working with teachers to implement instructional strategies that help students learn the best. This year, she looks forward to continuing the growth she and her colleagues have made in their building.  ...
