Good morning to you!

My sister recently sent me this picture of my father, his three siblings and their parents, likely taken sometime in the late 1940s. She told me it was hung on the living room wall at our grandparents’ home for years. I had not seen it before, as Grandpa died before I was born, and Grandma died when I was 2.

Of the six people in the photo, three were smiling. The other three were quite stern. Two were in their military uniforms. The others were in their Sunday best. The picture was out of focus. The paper is cracked. The details are fuzzy. Regardless, it is one of the few photos of my father’s family, and I cherish it.

In those days, and for decades after, cameras were simply not commonplace. Developing film was expensive, too. They didn’t take a dozen shots to get one good one like we do today. Photos could be manually touched up by the professionals, but there was no cropping or adjusting or photoshopping on a mobile phone or a home computer. They simply waited with anticipation to get the photos back from the lab, and they took the bad shots with the good ones.

I learned to roll and develop film in the darkrooms on my college campus. Those were necessary tasks for journalists to learn at the time. Years later, when I published an auto magazine, I took thousands of photos of cars for sale. In the beginning, we developed our own film and made prints. Later, we outsourced that. Eventually, we experimented with video and digital technology. All those changes occurred in just three years. It was a developing time, to be sure.

The newspapers I managed in the 1990s were still developing film. The sports photographers especially did not want to let go of that process. In time, though, they did.

This past year, in America alone, more than 1.93 trillion photos were taken — 94% of them with a smartphone. That’s 5.3 billion photos a day… 3.7 million photos per hour… 400 million photos per minute… 61 photos per second.

The average person in the U.S. now takes 20 photos a day, and the number of photos indexed by Google at the end of 2024 was more than 136 billion. More than 14 billion photos are shared every day across social networks and messengers.

Somehow, Grandma and Grandpa Goodman must have seen this all coming. That explains why they were not smiling.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

Stauch cites benefits of Des Moines Kennel Club

By Jackie Wilson

James Stauch, president of the Des Moines Kennel Club, with his boxer, Kylo.

For 100 years, the Des Moines Kennel Club has hosted dog shows in the Des Mones metro. This year’s event features a celebrity dog, Bing, along with approximately 1,000 other dogs representing 150 breeds.

The DMKC show is open to the public and free to attend. The show takes place at the Iowa State Fairground’s Varied Industries Building Sept. 5-7. Attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food item for either pets or humans.

American Kennel Club (AKC) judges will be on hand to judge dogs to see how closely they conform to their breed’s official standard. The judging is based on a point system for various breeds, factoring in traits, including the head, body and if they move properly. They also look at other factors, which determines if they get a conformation or an AKC championship. Winners of the breeds then go on to compete for the coveted Best of Breed competition. ...

Camping in style
Residents share the joy of traveling with the conveniences.

By Ashley Rullestad

Sitting around a campfire, toasting s’mores, telling stories and visiting with friends and family after a day of enjoying nature and exploring the big outdoors. Ah, the joys of camping! And you don’t have to hike into the woods — covered in bug spray — and pitch a tent to partake in the fun. Those who prefer to make the trip with a camper share why they like to have some of the conveniences of home — bed, bathroom, air conditioner and more — on the trip with them.

A camper, a playlist and a picnic
“I grew up camping and loved it,” Mickie Stringer shares. “I knew I always wanted to do the same with my family, but my childhood stories are what inspired my husband.”

Getting a camper wasn’t something Adam ever considered, but hearing his wife’s childhood memories convinced him otherwise.

The Stringers started by tent camping together, but once they had their son, they decided a camper would be a better option. In 2018, they officially made their purchase. ...
