Good morning to you!

I have frequently written about keys in this column. You may remember some. The key fob to my truck that is the size of a loaf of bread. Losing my keys multiple times. The carabiner solution. Clearly, I am obsessed about keys. In recent months, I joined the Apple AirTag community and resolved all my key anxiety. I thought. But first, some backstory.

I truly miss the two simple keys that used to come with all vehicles. Small. Thin. Easy to have copies made. And, most importantly, inexpensive. One key was for the ignition. The other unlocked the doors. Perfect. Then along came keyless entry and remote start. Both have proven to be wonderful inventions, but they won’t work from a thin, metal key. Instead, we now have massive key fobs with more buttons than my first calculator that are quite expensive to replace.

I tend to keep all my necessary keys on one ring, and I carry it with me. When I am at home or at work, I hang the ring in the exact same spots so I know where it is. When someone borrows this key ring, my brow crinkles from anxiety until it is back in my possession.

I understand that this is likely a personality trait, but it also stems from losing a ring of keys a time or two. Several years back, I was getting our camper ready for a family trip, and I misplaced my main set of keys, which had my house key, office key, truck key and a whole bunch of other keys. I searched high and low for many hours, multiple times. No luck. I priced how much the fobs alone would cost to replace, and I decided to offer a $50 reward to my three daughters for the first one who could find this ring of keys. They tried. Still no luck. The next spring, I was getting the camper ready again (had those keys on a separate ring) and opened a side compartment storage and asked my daughter Samantha to get something out for me. She comes running at me with my keys outreached, jingling in her hand, yelling, “I get 50 bucks!” I gladly paid her. Of course, this was six months from the time I lost the keys, and I had already replaced them all. Even so, I was happy to have my keys back — and now I had a complete spare set!

In recent months, after my wife “misplaced” her keys, I decided to finally buy a set of Apple AirTags. If you are an Apple user and are not familiar with these, take note, as they are wonderful. For those of you who don’t know, they connect with the “Find My” app on the iPhone, and users can see where the tags are at all times.

I was riding my motorcycle the other day, and I had my trusty keys on my trusty carabiner hooked to my trusty belt loop with the trusty Apple AirTag attached. Somehow, the AirTag slipped out of its cover, but the software worked as it should, and I found the tag. It must have fallen out while I was riding and took a few bounces and rolls, but, much like my trusty Timex watch, it took a licking and kept on ticking. It is now back in its case and attached to my carabiner, which will no longer be hooked on my beltloop while I am on motorcycle rides.

So, once again, I love technology and I yearn for simpler days at the same time.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
Another civic bragging right. Lawnstarter’s annual list of the dirtiest and cleanest U.S. cities is out for 2025, and Des Moines is No. 3 cleanest, just ahead of Davenport. San Bernardino ranked dirtiest and South Bend as cleanest. I believe that if Sonny Berger were still alive, the Hell's Angels would have kept "Berdoo" clean. At least they would have covered the mess up. It is a bit righteous, though, that the town that birthed McDonald's and Taco Bell left a mess behind.

Pho 515 owner Don Cotran and family took a four-week, all provinces food hunting trip to Vietnam this summer and returned with a lot of recipe ideas. He is training staff now and estimates a new menu will be served in the restaurant by November.
