Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I, too, looked forward to the TV show that I watched on cable TV in Algona in the mid 1970s (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). I remember the theme song as the show was starting, singing the lines as my two children would roll their eyes at me! Sgt. Schultz and Col. Klink played the parts well especially when the Gestapo with Maj. Hochstetter showed up to interrogate the prisoners, and Hogan would be one step ahead of them. ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ had to be another classic show!” - Louie

In the words of Col. Klink: “Dis…missed.” - Shane

“The last time one of my family members was ever early was his birth (Timely or tardy, Aug. 11, 2025).” - Brad

Just curious. Are young kids still being taught how to read a clock in school? - Shane

“Shane, I always enjoy your column and opinions. This one on timeliness needed the late G. Wyatt Schultz’s perspective: ‘If you’re just on time, you’re late!’ (Timely or tardy, Aug. 11, 2025). That was his approach to many things in work and life, but especially in regard to wrestling events. Always showed up before anyone else, and definitely the first one to find his spot in the media rooms. The younger guys seemed to show up at the last minute and would wonder why they couldn’t get a choice spot. He would just grin and say, ‘I see you’re just getting here.’ They knew what was up and enjoyed the razzing. I think you knew that about Wyatt. Thanks for reminding me of this part of his character!” - Kirsten

I smile every time I think of Wyatt. And you made me smile again. Thanks, Kirsten. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. If you go by large fleet vehicle dealers you'll notice an abundance of white vehicles (What your vehicle’s color may say about you, Aug. 12, 2025). In Iowa, all county sheriff's patrol vehicles are white. Commercial fleet vehicles are often white before decals, painting or wrapping is applied. I just point this out as it may not be popularity of white but practicality.” - John

You may be right. But if you are truly interested in other perspectives on why consumers choose white vehicles, here is a great piece from Motor Biscuit, which says it has more to do with contrast, heat absorption and current trends. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

As stone fruit season comes to an end...
We think we found out why California stone fruits have been so much more expensive this year. It's not ICE, it's rodents. Fresno’s Stone Fruit Growers of peaches, nectarines, plums, apricots and all their hybrids said that unprecedented numbers of rodents are causing so much damage to crops this year that labor costs soared for repairing their damage. We wonder where they came from. Are they fleeing LA and SF because they have to fight with "campers" for every scrap?

Northwest cherries were actually cheaper this year because there was so little rain that the crops needed fewer expensive helicopters to keep them dry and edible. (Fruit Growers News, San Francisco Chronicle)

After 20 years, Cactus Bob's closed.

The legendary, long-banned in America, mangosteens are in season and available at the checkout at CFresh Market (801 University Ave., Des Moines). Thai Airlines used to advertise this season to Americans wanting to taste the forbidden fruit. Black markets in San Francisco sold them for as much as $50 each.

By Jim Duncan

RJ Tursi is the creator and owner of Exile Brewing Company in the historic Fitch shampoo factory. It is the largest brewery in Des Moines and the third largest in Iowa. Its restaurant has added a new Tursi Family Classics section to its menu. RJ’s father, Bobby Tursi, owned and operated Tursi’s Latin King for 38 years.

We asked RJ to lunch last month and met in Exile’s dining room. Over dunkels, lagers, ales and chicken spiedini, we talked about breweries, traditions and business timing. ...

Meet Richard Lock
Inspired by teachers to become a music educator himself

By T.K. West

Richard Lock grew up with a love of music. While attending school, he joined anything and everything singing-related that he could. Lock credits the many wonderful teachers around him as the original motivation to become a music teacher, especially his late aunt, Missy, who was a middle school choir teacher for more 20 years.

Because of his passion, Lock went on to study music education at Drake University. At the end of his final year in college, he was looking for jobs and saw an opportunity at the Southeast Polk Middle School. Lock says he enjoys working with the district because of the freedom he has to build a new program while feeling supported by the community and the administration. ...
