Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025)." - Steve

And don’t let go! - Shane

“I had to fact-check the ‘MASH’ comment (Mailbag, Aug. 1, 2025). The pilot episode of ‘M*A*S*H’, the first episode of the first season, was broadcast on Sept. 17, 1972.” - Ron

Noted. Thank you. - Shane

“Did you know if you can find the right quilter, they can turn your priceless collection of T-shirts into a quilt (Black concert T-shirts, Aug. 4, 2025)? Thereby capturing a lifelong collection of memories in a keepsake that can be passed along for generations to come! And making an even more priceless quilt.” - Chuck

I don’t have enough to even make one quilt, but my buddy Dave had enough to make a truckload of them. - Shane

“Thank you so much for that great list of most popular (and coveted) concert shirts (Black concert T-shirts, Aug. 4, 2025)! My husband has MANY. My drummer-brother's vintage shirts were made into a quilt by our mom. We are still avid collectors.” - Lisa

My daughter made me a really cool quilt of my old wrestling T-shirts, but my dresser drawers are now empty. - Shane

“Shane, I found a T-shirt at a thrift store that was printed specifically for a concert in Berkeley, California, for a May 30,1970, Jimi Hendrix performance (Black concert T-shirts, Aug. 4, 2025). It says on the front to send a cashier’s check or money order and a self-addressed stamped envelope for tickets and also has the ticket prices of $2, $3, $4, $5 or $6 V.I.P. section. Nothing else on the back. Can you imagine getting a T-shirt for a single performance before the concert, paying by having the tickets sent to you, and paying the price advertised for Jimi Hendrix?” - James

But first, are you experienced? Or have you ever been experienced? - Shane

“Loved ‘WKRP’ (Goodbye, Jennifer Marlowe, Aug. 5, 2025). Too many great episodes to mention. But I particularly chuckled each time someone forgot to honor Les Nessman's (invisible) walls and door. Even he opened and closed his (invisible) door — a guy trying to salvage a little dignity when little seemed available. - Brad

I had to search a bit, but I found a clip from one of those episodes. A true classic. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

There's supply and demand and then there's New York City. For the last decade, food and beverage tenants surpassed all other retail sectors in leasing properties in the Big Apple, accounting for at least 35% of New York City’s total leased square footage. How? NYC restaurants are coming back but are still far from pre-pandemic numbers. Restaurants remain risky business. Though rents are down compared to the years before COVID, Gen Z (ages 19-29) is spending much less on dining out and dating than any generation since the 1960s. As Des Moines' mentor/chef George Formaro says, "When a young person asks me for advice opening a new restaurant, I just say, 'Don't.' "

Total U.S. eating and drinking place sales are expected to reach $1.5 trillion this year, up $400 billion from 2024, according to the National Restaurant Association.

Daily newspapers have been contracting in sales and coverage since the internet became mainstream. Yet the New York Post is expanding to the West Coast and will begin publishing a Los Angeles edition soon.

Dream yards
Residents share how they make the best of their outdoor spaces.

By Sean Dengler

Give 10 people the blank slate of a spacious yard, and you are likely to see those yards evolve into 10 different visions. Some will be a fenced-in oasis for dogs and kids to run, roll and play. Others will have pools and fire pits for summer fun. A few may even feature makeshift ballfields, sledding hills, playgrounds or ponds. And most all will provide a scenic setting for enjoying sunrises and sunsets. Whatever the vision, area residents share how their outdoor spaces have become their dream yards.

A career, a hobby, a life
With a former career in landscape design and landscape construction, Gary Garles knows the technical and business sides of how to put forward a great looking yard.

“My career was landscaping,” Gary says. “My hobby was landscaping. I've had access for years to all sorts of wholesale nurseries that other people wouldn't necessarily be able to get ahold of.  I've been able to acquire some plants that really aren't on the market for sale.  We have some rare, some unusual things and some things that are just hard to find. Usually when garden clubs come by here and do a tour, they want to see those things because they've never seen them before.” ...
