Good morning to you!

“Ability is important in our quest for success, but dependability is crucial.”

That’s a quote from Zig Ziglar that I shared with our Big Green Umbrella Media staff. I believe those words to be true in our work relationships but also in how we rely on family and friends. The real question, though, is how each of us defines “dependable.”

Several words come to mind for me. Trustworthy. Reliable. Consistent. Steady. Predictable. Several phrases do, too. Having confidence in. Worthy of being relied on. Tested and proven.

A few months ago while at a fundraising event, I heard the best definition yet — and it was only three letters. GSD.

The speaker at the event was giving thanks to the many volunteers who helped to make the organization successful, and he took extra time to thank one person in particular. He pointed out how this person proved to be reliable. Consistent. Steady. Predictable. Tested. Proven. He said this person was definitely a GSD.

I had no idea what he meant, but I assumed everyone else did. I ran a few possibilities through my brain. Glycogen Storage Disease? No. General Services Department? Probably not. Graduate School of Design? Unlikely. German Shepherd Dog? Negative.

So, I did what most every man in that situation would do, and I leaned over to my wife and asked, “What is a GSD?” She didn’t know either.

Fortunately, the speaker soon explained that a GSD is someone who “Gets Stuff Done” — except he used a different word than “stuff.” You get the idea. You also certainly know some people who are GSDs — and some people who are not.

GSDs show up. On time. Every time. GSDs have their tasks completed without any excuses. GSDs think ahead to what should be done next. GSDs continually look for ways to improve and be more efficient. In short, you don’t have to worry about a GSD, because you know he or she will have the bases covered — and more.

I would like to think that most of us want to be known as reliable, but I really can’t think of a better compliment than being called a GSD. Be sure to share that tribute with one you know today.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend that females over 14 should aim for at least 25-28 grams of fiber per day, while males should aim for 31-34 grams. Most Americans do not meet these recommendations, with over 90% of females and 97% of males falling short. (Dietary Guidelines for Americans)

7-OH is under fire by the Food and Drug Administration which is calling for labels to identify it as an "opioid" which would make it a controlled substance. Currently it is available at many vape stores and convenience markets without a prescription. FDA agents are also moving to modernize the 18-year-old labeling for oxytocin which was based on one test of 50 arthritis patients that lasted two weeks, according to FDA head Marty Makary.

ART NEWS
A tale of two companies

By Jim Duncan

Playhouse debutante Hannah Zepeda leans on Playhouse legend Maxwell Shaeffer in “Waitress.” (courtesy of DMCP)

Des Moines supported the arts in record numbers this July, and not just for free stuff like Fourth of July Pops and various street festivals. We came about a new civic pride watching Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) and Des Moines Community Playhouse (DMCP) productions in completely full houses the same week last month. Neither company performs in a large theater, but “sold out” performances are rare for most all regional operas or community theaters. Even more impressive were the audience reactions to DMMO and “Waitress” performances.  ...

Dream yards
Residents share how they make the best of their outdoor spaces.

By Joe Baumbgarten

Give 10 people the blank slate of a spacious yard, and you are likely to see those yards evolve into 10 different visions. Some will be a fenced-in oasis for dogs and kids to run, roll and play. Others will have pools and fire pits for summer fun. A few may even feature makeshift ballfields, sledding hills, playgrounds or ponds. And most all will provide a scenic setting for enjoying sunrises and sunsets. Whatever the vision, area residents share how their outdoor spaces have become their dream yards.

Controlled chaos
There is easily enough going on in Julie and Tom Stork’s backyard to keep a large team of landscapers busy. Surrounding the large open area of lusciously green grass, they have multiple gardens with numerous plants, flowers and vegetables. They have two varieties of peas, tomatoes, asparagus, lettuce, Swish chard, zucchini, strawberries, rhubarb and peppers. They have cone flowers, poppies, larkspur, hollyhocks, hibiscus and coreopsis.
“This plant here is an experiment,” Julie says, pointing to one. “I’m not quite sure what it is. I thought I had planted some flower seeds, but it looks more like a weed. I’m waiting for it to bloom before I decide to keep it or pull it.”  ...
