Good morning to you!

“Go ahead and pass me. I left on time.” I read those words on a bumper sticker on a car in front of me the other day, and I laughed. Fortunately, I also left on time.

Do you ever wonder why some people seem to be continually late while others are almost always early? What makes one person able to be so timely and another to be so tardy? You may think the answer is that they simply leave earlier. Although that is certainly the solution, I am intrigued by the psychology in being late.

First, I should point out that I am a stickler for being on time, and I am annoyed when others are not. I am even more perturbed when someone else’s lack of planning makes me late. But, truth be told, I wasn’t always this way. I used to enjoy racing against the clock to see how close I could cut it but still be on time. It was a game to me. Sometimes I won. Sometimes I didn’t. What I failed to recognize, though, was the unnecessary stress this put on me and the unnecessary frustrations it caused others. Later in life, I learned how planning to be early reduced so much stress. It sounds simple, but is it?

Various studies show that people who are continually late do so due to a combination of factors such as poor time perception, disorganization and conditions like ADHD. These individuals often underestimate the time needed for tasks and struggle with managing their schedules. Most of you who are timely likely agree with this. But it goes deeper. Freudian psychologists cite causes such as neurotic self-destructive tendencies or a flaw in early developmental stages. They say personality may also be to blame, particularly if a person is low on the trait of conscientiousness.

Here’s another answer, according to an article published in Psychology Today. Psychologists Emily Waldun and Mark McDaniel discovered that chronic lateness may originate, at least somewhat, in what is called time-based prospective memory (TBPM). The story says, “In the lab, researchers test TBPM by giving participants a certain amount of time to complete a task, requiring them to pace themselves so they actually get it done. Participants have the option of checking the clock before the available time runs out. You might think that everyone would take the option of checking the clock, but the experiments are set up so that it’s easy to forget to take advantage of this strategy because participants are occupied by their task.”

In short, it states that people who are good at TBPM tasks are able to regulate their own clock-checking behavior, so they are less reliant on their potentially flawed internal timekeeper. With this in mind, the article offers three tips to help reduce your time estimation bias: 1) check the clock, 2) create a strategy for getting things done on time and 3) don’t fall prey to the temptation to do “one more thing” before you have to leave.

If you are frustrated by someone who is continually late, or want to improve on this bad habit yourself, check out the full story. Oh, and leave on time.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
Jacob Demars is the new executive chef at Wilson’s Ciderhouse in Des Moines. Demars is one of those sadly unlucky guys who opened his first restaurant (R/I) just days before COVID shut down commerce. The demise of R/I was one of the greatest restaurant tragedies of the epidemic, along with that of Troy Trostel and his Broken Arrow. Trostel lost his businesses, his truck, his house and his family because of the reaction to the virus. He never recovered and died far too young. Demars told us over the weekend that he is very "happy to be back." Demars also worked as chef for Marlene's at the wind-grieved Sevastapol Station. Wilson's has a knack for hiring great chefs. They also talked Matt Steigerwald (Lincoln Cafe founder) into running their first kitchen at the original Wilson's restaurant in Iowa City.

Saffron opened at 8759 Northpark Drive in Johnston last week with Indian cuisine and special prices on weekends. Lunch and dinner are served every day but Monday. The huge menu offers lots of vegetarian choices and covers the entire sub continent with dishes named for places as divergent as Kashmir and Chettinad. They also offer a long menu of Indo-Chinese dishes.

Dream yards
Residents share how they make the best of their outdoor spaces.

By Ashley Rullestad

Give 10 people the blank slate of a spacious yard, and you are likely to see those yards evolve into 10 different visions. Some will be a fenced-in oasis for dogs and kids to run, roll and play. Others will have pools and fire pits for summer fun. A few may even feature makeshift ballfields, sledding hills, playgrounds or ponds. And most all will provide a scenic setting for enjoying sunrises and sunsets. Whatever the vision, area residents share how their outdoor spaces have become their dream yards.
