Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. After school in the New York metropolitan area in the late 1960s was dominated by the fad of Soupy Sales and, in a minor role, Zacherle (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). They started out as cartoon introducers but evolved into loosely organized skit shows. Soupy was suspended for a joke about asking kids to sneak in their parents room, take green pieces of paper with pictures on them and send them to Soupy and he'd send them a post card from a Caribbean Island. It stirred protests at the station, not huge but far larger than last weekend's ‘Late Show’ pitiful turnout. Zacherle suffered his own tale of demise. I watched many of the shows you mentioned, but a whole generation of cops were inspired by Pete Malloy saying to Nurse Dixie, ‘That’s because I'm a trained observer’ during the pilot of 'Emergency.’ KMG365.” - John

I had to look up who Zacherle was, but I do certainly remember Soupy Sales from the early days of cable TV on WTCG out of Atlanta before it became WTBS. And, am I wrong, or was Pete Malloy a character played by Martin Milner on “Adam-12”? - Shane

“I enjoyed your recent article on how we connect to certain television shows (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). Your comment that you spent way too much time in front of the TV console as a child brought back a lot of memories. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mason City television station KGLO featured an after-school cartoon program called ‘Bart's Clubhouse’ hosted by Bart Curran. On any given weekday afternoon, my sister, LuAnn, and I could be found glued to the screen watching cartoons as evidenced by the attached picture taken around 1958. Note that I've just gotten off the school bus and didn't even stop to take off my jacket and cap.” - Bob

I also recall “Bart’s Clubhouse” in its final years in the early 1970s. My brother and I would watch this on channel 3. We took our hats and coats off, though. - Shane

“Things used to last longer with less tinkering (Technology woes, July 30, 2025). I bought a then very old Coke machine from a drug store 52 years ago for $50. It still works great in 2025.” - Mike

Keep it plugged in. I will bring over some quarters. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Diet Cokagne and Coffee Mate for cocktails
Tom Hanks kicked off a summer drink sensation on a visit to the Stephen Colbert show by revealing his summer drink of choice is “Diet Cokagne.” Hanks explained that while celebrating at Cafe Carlyle, a bottle of champagne was gifted to him. Explaining that his drink of choice is a Diet Coke (he’s a type-2 diabetic), he asked for a shot of champagne in his soda.  According to Hanks, you fill your glass with one-third of Diet Coke, then top the rest with champagne. According to “Broken Palate,” "The drink tastes strangely like a Dirty Shirley with a lot of tutti frutti notes."

“Broken Palate” also reported other summer drinking trends of 2025 include: jalapeno slices in white wine; electrolyte-rich pickle juice in spritz and in beer; and spiked dirty soda, particularly adding Rumchata to Coke but so trendy that Coffee Mate has come out with a line of creamers meant to pair with soda instead of coffee.

FEATURE STORY
Seeking central Iowa’s ultimate BBQ

By Jim Duncan

Historically, Iowa has been barbecue challenged. Before refrigeration became common, the BBQ genre developed in the American South as the main method of preserving meat, seafood and poultry. In Iowa, ice was more expendable than hard wood, which was better used to heat homes. So, we built ice houses, and the South built smokehouses.

Because BBQ was a means to avoid waste, whole animal cooking dominated America’s original BBQ. Whole hog BBQ was so associated with southerners that the slang term “going whole hog” was coined by New Englander Daniel Webster in answer to a question about what he expected from a presidency of Tennessee’s Andrew Jackson. ...

Dream yards
Residents share how they make the best of their outdoor spaces.

By Ashley Rullestad

Give 10 people the blank slate of a spacious yard, and you are likely to see those yards evolve into 10 different visions. Some will be a fenced-in oasis for dogs and kids to run, roll and play. Others will have pools and fire pits for summer fun. A few may even feature makeshift ballfields, sledding hills, playgrounds or ponds. And most all will provide a scenic setting for enjoying sunrises and sunsets. Whatever the vision, area residents share how their outdoor spaces have become their dream yards.

Suburban oasis
Vicki and Jeff Meeker moved into their central Ankeny home in 2013. The backyard of the house backs up to First Street, and Vicki knew she wanted to create something special out of the nice corner lot yard. ...
