Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Hi, Shane. I enjoy reading your column every day. Keep up the good work. Here are a couple of my favorite quotes (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): 1) ‘There are three stages of life: young, middle age and you’re looking good!’ 2) ‘Life is like a roll of toilet paper; the closer to the end it gets, the faster it goes!’ 3) ‘If something moves and it is not supposed to, use duct tape. If something doesn't move, but it is supposed to, use WD-40!’ ” - Larry

Well, Larry, you are looking good! - Shane

“Shane, I have been reading your morning articles for quite a while now and have come to the conclusion that you and I would’ve been great friends when we were kids. So many things in common. I also loved ‘Hogan’s Heroes’ (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). My friends and I would race home from school every day and crash in front of the TV to watch. Any scene with Sgt. Schultz and Col. Klink immediately brought laughs! Thanks for bringing up so many good memories in your columns. ‘I see nothing! I hear nothing! I know nothing!’ ” - Kevin

I think we all have a little Sgt. Schultz in us… or maybe we should. - Shane

“I still watch ‘Hogan's Heroes’ reruns (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). Love that show. - Brad

We will likely both be watching more of those reruns now. - Shane

“How about ‘Mission Impossible’ (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025)? Mr. Briggs, Cinnamon and Barney.” - John

I somehow missed that one in my youth. But, there’s still time! - Shane

“Shane, how could you leave out ‘MASH,’ another semi-military show that taught you about the horrors of war and also about helping people, making lifetime friends, and laughing at all the characters (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). Oh, and Hot Lips! - Dennis

I did watch ‘MASH,’ too, but it wasn’t part of my after-school ritual. - Shane

“What a coincidence. Last night, I did not like any regular TV or other TV options, so I turned on ‘Hogans Heroes,’ a longtime favorite (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). As many reruns of that show that I have watched, I do not remember this one where they were celebrating Hogan’s birthday. Now, let me take you back 75 years and my favorite night of the week for listening to NBC radio (Tuesday), when Dad was at Rotary and Mom would fix our favorite meal — sloppy joe’s, French fries and chocolate malts (made with a real malt maker dad kept when he sold his drugstore). After dinner, my siblings and I would lay on the dining room floor in front of our Philco radio and listen to Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Fibber McGee and Molly, and Baby Snooks (played by Fanny Brice). You couldn’t get better entertainment than that. They are all gone, and I still miss them.” - Duane

Your memories remind me of how quickly times have changed… and are still changing. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Trends, like them or not
The confection known as Dubai chocolate, a Tik Tok sensation, typically involves a shell of rich chocolate filled with pistachio cream and a shredded dough known as kataifi. It has triggered supply-chain squeezes, shaken up German courts and caused a run on U.K. grocery stores, forcing them to impose purchasing limits. It has also spurred some of the biggest food companies in America to consider whether the Dubai chocolate flavor might endure as a future classic, like a pumpkin spice or salted caramel. (WSJ)

David Protein has begun selling frozen fillets of raw cod alongside its fudge brownie and blueberry pie bars. The company has won a large following of customers, but at times has heard criticism from some critics of processed food. It is now selling four pieces of wild-caught Pacific cod sourced from a sustainable fishing company at $55 online, where it also charges $39 for a box of 12 protein bars. New York City billboards promoting the product say “Boiled cod. Slightly more protein per calorie than our bars.” (WSJ)

By Cyote Williams

The Iowa State Fair has many staples that fairgoers recognize or have experienced time and time again. The butter cow, the giant yellow slide, the midway, deep fried everything and Hairball performing at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater. One of those is changing this year, as Hairball will take its talents to the grandstand.

Dave Moody joined Hairball during the COVID pandemic and has been performing vocals for the band ever since — meaning he has had his share of experiencing what the Iowa State Fair crowd is like. ...

Meet Brad Rose
Valley athletic director for 16 years retires.

By Jackie Wilson

With 30 team state championships, five all-sport trophies and hundreds of other accolades, Valley High School is at the top of high school sports, music and drama, thanks in part to athletic director Brad Rose.

Rose, who joined Valley High School as director of athletics and activities and managed 45 different clubs at Valley, retired on July 1 after 16 years of service. Zac Sinram takes over Rose’s position.

Part of Rose’s job is to hire directors and coaches. In turn, these coaches have gone on to coach winning teams. Last year, Valley won 18 of 23 state titles. Speech, music and drama students have won dozens of championships. Valley’s football coach Gary Swenson has won more than 400 games in his career. The girls soccer coach, Rob Chapman, has won more than 600 games, plus six state titles. Valley hosts more than 200 events a year. ...
