Good morning to you!

Birdbrain. It’s not a name most of us want to be called. Yes, birds have small brains, but does that mean they are dumb? Maybe. Maybe not.

Yesterday morning, I was awakened by a familiar thud on my bedroom window. I had a good guess what it was, and I was correct. There, lying motionless on the deck below, was a bird that apparently thought it saw a clear path into my home but instead collided head first with a pane of glass. The glass won.

Most of you have dealt with similar situations. In fact, according to allaboutbirds.org, about 1 billion birds die from window strikes in the U.S. each year. But why? Well, according to the site, birds apparently crash into windows “because they see reflections of vegetation or sky, or they see through the glass to potted plants or vegetation on the other side.” These collisions are most frequent at dawn and dusk. Hence, my morning wake-up.

The website says there is one additional reason, and it may surprise you. Birds will also crash into windows due to “reflection aggression,” which sometimes happens when birds see their reflection in a window and attack it. I have dealt with this, and it can be annoying. Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, it seldom results in a dead bird.

Back to the full-speed crashes of birds into windows. The bird’s brain may not be the problem. The bird’s skull is. The skull of a normal bird usually weighs about 1% of the bird's total body weight. In comparison, a human skull weighs about 8% of the body. This may explain why I can crash through my patio door head first without a blemish while the bird that rammed into my window won’t be doing anything again.

Meanwhile, some of us humans choose to punch each other in the head, and we even pay money to watch some people knock other people unconscious. The knuckles of the boxers are covered with 12-ounce gloves, but the impact is undoubtedly severe.

If that’s not enough, many of us also tune in on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and watch some of the world’s biggest and best athletes slam their skulls into each other on football fields, with only a mere layer of plastic and foam protecting them.

And we mock birds for having little intellect? I guess we know who the real birdbrains are.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
What do aging hippies do anymore? Here's a clue. Smoothies, once a staple of the organic hippie diet, have become a luxury item in Los Angeles and the Hamptons. The high-end grocer Erewhon is even making some in collaboration with high end brands and celebrities. Erewhon’s summer pop-up in the Hamptons sells 20-ounce smoothies for $20 with hippie names like Velvet Rope, Raw Linen and Zero Gravity. "Righteous man." And that’s become a deal with other “far out” people paying $30 for vitamin- and nutrient-enriched, guru-blessed smoothies elsewhere in the Hamptons, Malibu and Laguna Beach.

Wallace House wants to be called by Wallace Centers of Iowa. By any name, it is one of Iowa's greatest tributes to The Woebegone. It concludes its summer farm to table dinner series tonight, "inspired by Iowa State Fair classics" with Gabriel Kerr in charge of the kitchen. They are already posting an autumn series which kicks off with a garlic event Oct. 1.

FEATURE STORY
Buffalo Bill, Des Moines and the Iowa State Fair

By John Busbee

By the time the shows ended their 33-year run, Buffalo Bill’s Wild West had played to more than 50 million people. It was the spectacle of the era, performed for European royalty to salt-of-the-earth people in America’s Heartland. With its popularity, William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody became the most recognized figure of his time. He headlined his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Exposition in more than 3,000 locations. One location was Des Moines and, once, the Iowa State Fair, was significant.

He returned to his Iowa birth state many times, presenting his spectacle show in 36 Iowa communities. His show, including its predecessor, Buffalo Bill’s Combination Acting Troupe, regaled Des Moines throngs 13 times between 1879 and 1916. Specters of those unforgettable times still reverberate in the capital city’s legacy. ...

SWAP promotes water quality
Coffey uses rainwater for native lawn.

By Jackie Wilson

The front lawn of Evelyn Coffey’s West Des Moines home reveals a prairie-like garden, with wildflowers and native plants. The best part of it? She hasn’t watered her plants once this year with the garden hose — even during the near-drought conditions in early June.

Coffey took advantage of the City of West Des Moines’ Stormwater Assistance Program (SWAP), which provides cost-share funding to residents who install native landscaping, rain gardens, rain barrels and other stormwater best practices that promote water quality.
Coffey and her family lived in both Hawaii and California, where lawns weren’t a big deal. Once she moved to Iowa in 2021, she didn’t want a manicured lawn. ...
