Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, as a retired truck driver for 50 years, I thought I'd seen it all, until I started driving my car and motorcycle more (Distracted driving, July 28, 2025). I quit riding a motorcycle because of two accidents involving distracted drivers. Now, having learned over the years to keep my eyes moving, I see reckless people whenever I drive. I saw a person appearing to try to find an address either by GPS or a road map. Oh, did I mention that person was driving an 18-wheeler? Look out folks; it's only going to get worse.” - James

Well, let's hope the new law will change some habits. - Shane

“I enjoyed your recent article on the history of toilet paper (Can you spare a square?, July 21, 2025). Where else but The Daily Umbrella can you find such useful and interesting information? Like most of your readers, I cringed at your list of items that were used prior to the invention of TP, especially the use of corn cobs. I have been told that there are two kinds of corn cobs: red ones and white ones. Apparently, you used a white corn cob to see if you needed to use another red corn cob.” - Bob

It gives corn on the cob an entire new meaning. - Shane

“I first saw the original ‘MASH’ TV show while doing boot camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky, January through March, 1970. That show struck me strong, and, from then on, when returning home, I watched it and still do every chance I get. The other show I loved forever was ‘Dragnet.’ Sgt. Joe Friday! Thanks for the memories!” - Alan

“MASH” is certainly a classic. And your note inspired me to try to catch an episode or two of “Dragnet,” too. - Shane

‘HEY, YOU GUYS!!!!’ I didn’t have to tap the link to remember that phrase (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). I had four boys, seven years apart. There were very few shows that all the boys would watch together without us calling it ‘Family Time.’ When that phrase came out of the TV, whoever was in the house would yell the same words to his brothers outside, and everyone came running. It appealed to all of us. I even watched while making dinner. Thanks for all you do to bring these memories to mind. ‘We’re gonna turn you on; we’re gonna give you the power.’ Thanks again.” - Donna

Of course, I will be singing “The Electric Company” theme song all day long now. - Shane

“I wonder if anyone remembers pre-TV shows from when they were kids on the radio like ‘Let's Pretend’ with Gene Hersholt and Elena Verdugo (TV shows that connect, July 29, 2025). And ‘The Green Hornet,’ ‘Archie’ and so many others on Saturday mornings. Good memories. - Margaret

Not me, but I am sure some readers are smiling right now. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Food & Politics

The National Restaurant Association joined 72 organizations, including the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace, in urging Congress to pass the Save Local Business Act. This bill would restore the long-standing “direct and immediate control” standard for determining joint employer status under the National Labor Relations Act and Fair Labor Standards Act. Without this clarification, nearly every business relationship — including franchise models and contractor agreements — could trigger joint employer liability, threatening small business growth and workforce stability.

Bartender’s Handshake just made a USA Today list of 29 best bars in America. Earlier this year, Oak Park made a USA Today list of best new restaurants in America. The DM Register has been part of the Gannett network for a long time but only recently seems to have the clout to make such national USA Today lists, which are a big deal because USA Today has been doing them for decades. I suspect Susan Stapleton, DMR entertainment editor, is responsible for pushing the city’s image. Thanks, Susan.

Darnell serves with compassion
Assisting others and building relationships

By Lindsey Giardino

Most of Becky Darnell’s volunteer work is through her church, Norwalk Christian Church — and it certainly keeps her busy.
Darnell serves in the Meals on Wheels ministry, delivering meals one day a week with her husband, Don.

“There is a great need to help provide one meal a day for people in the community who, for many reasons, need assistance,” she says. “Other than providing a meal, it is good to know that each day someone is checking on them.”    ...
