Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I attended a seminar hosted by Mary Eikenberry this morning and was pleased to receive a copy of SENIORVIEW. What a treat! CITYVIEW and Waukee Living magazine are also great reads. All have such useful information, good news (instead of all the bad news on TV and the internet), and I especially enjoy the From the Publisher columns you write. All are such a delight. Thank you to you and your staff for developing/continuing these great publications.” - Renae

Thank you, Renae. I am glad you are reading. - Shane

“Shane, nearly 40 years ago, the Panora Church of the Brethren posted this in front of the church, and it has stuck with me (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): ‘Nothing quiets criticism like participation.’ ” - Kirby

Ah, how true. And that’s another great reason to get involved. - Shane

“A good friend and fishing buddy of mine has used the phrase (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025), ‘Everything in moderation, including moderation.’ I have borrowed and used it for years.” - Ron

That one is very close to one of my favorites: Too much of one thing… bad; little bit of everything… good. - Shane

“Hi, Shane. I just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know I really enjoyed your article in the Urbandale Living July 2025 magazine. I had a good chuckle over it as I thought of our own yard mistakes over the years. Thank you!” - Sherry

I am glad someone finds humor in my mistakes. Unfortunately, I have many more. - Shane

“Shane, I do quite enjoy my Daily Umbrella, and I always check your column (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025). Most of these quotes are not ‘motivational,’ but most are pretty interesting:

• ‘Always store beer in a cold, dark place.’
• ‘Never try to teach a pig to sing – it wastes your time and annoys the pig.’
• ‘The more you know, the less you need.’
• ‘Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it.’
• ‘A committee is a life form with six or more legs and no brain.’
• ‘A generation which ignores history has no past — and no future.’
• ‘Yield to temptation; it may not pass your way again.’
• ‘You live and learn. Or you don't live long.’ ” - Ron

Ron’s Eight Commandments. I like them. - Shane

“How about this one (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): ‘If you don't swear while driving, you are not paying enough attention to the road.’ - George

Good point, dammit. Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Serious restaurant reviews in the age of Yelp. Washington Post has reduced the number of restaurants it reviews drastically. Its food section now is mostly just recipes. The Des Moines Register hasn't reviewed a restaurant for years. They prefer features about new places that are hardly ever critical. But the New York Times recently decided to review restaurants from the entire country, not just greater New York City. A national survey found that 49% of readers like the idea but more do not. We do because someone with an aegis of authority should.

Lobbyists and bureaucracy, oil and fire. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has now dumbed down the use of the word "organic" in food production to just "95% organic."

PEOPLE & PETS
Little Bit and Caydence

By Jackie Wilson

Two of Sarah Ohms’ pets seemed to appear randomly, right at the moment when she wasn’t looking to adopt a pet.

Caydence, a redbone coonhound, came into her life seven years ago. Ohms was volunteering at the Animal Lifeline when a litter of six puppies needed homes.

With two remaining puppies who didn’t get picked, Ohms adopted Caydence. She already had a dog, Mylie, at home.

“I got puppy fever and wanted another dog,” she explains.      ...

Dream yards
Residents share how they make the best of their outdoor spaces.

By Rachel Harrington

Give 10 people the blank slate of a spacious yard, and you are likely to see those yards evolve into 10 different visions. Some will be a fenced-in oasis for dogs and kids to run, roll and play. Others will have pools and fire pits for summer fun. A few may even feature makeshift ballfields, sledding hills, playgrounds, ponds. And most all will provide a scenic setting for enjoying sunrises and sunsets. Whatever the vision, area residents share how their outdoor spaces have become their dream yards.

A safe place to play
Jon McLaren has spent more than two decades in the lawncare industry as the owner of Innovative Home and Outdoor Solutions, and, as such, he has ample knowledge about the ins and outs of keeping a lush, green lawn. He and his family built their Norwalk home about three years ago, and he had a plan for exactly how he wanted his yard to look.   ...
