Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Motivation is short term (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025). Life gets in the way. Forming habits is for the long term. Write down the habit you want to form.” - Brenda

Good points. On a related note, I once a heard a speaker talk about how motivational talks are just a “sugar high,” and that learning how to truly implement change is key. - Shane

“Here are a few (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): ‘Success is never final, failure never fatal, it's courage to continue that counts,’ - Winston Churchill; ‘Remember this your lifetime through, tomorrow there will be more to do, and failure awaits all who stay, with some success made yesterday. Today, you must try once more, and even harder than before,’ - John Wooden; ‘You cannot live a perfect day without doing something for someone who can never repay you,’ - John Wooden; ‘When you anger builds in your mouth, the best things to have on the tip of your tongue are teeth marks,’ - Brad Hicks.” - Brad

You listed out some great people, especially the last guy. And I am reading “They Call Me Coach” right now. Thanks for the tip. - Shane

“Quoteworthy (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): ‘What we do for ourselves dies with us; what we do for others and the world remains, and is immortal.’ - Albert Pike.” - John

And despite what we may be led to believe, that is where true satisfaction comes from. Thank you, John. - Shane

“Quote for your morning huddle (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): ‘It doesn't cost any more to pay attention the first time.’ ” - Kathy

And a related one from John Wooden I can never forget: “If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?” - Shane

“Quote from Grandma Gallup (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): “You must always tell the truth, BUT you don't have to tell everything you know.” - John

Grandma Gallup was wise. Thank you, John. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

One interesting effect of the Genius Act’s mainstreaming of digital financial assets is that big retailers like Walmart and Amazon are now seriously working on ways to replace credit cards — and their fees — with their own crypto credit, backed by other assets like UD dollars. Next step, restaurants, at least huge ones, could by-pass credit card payments and their high fees with similar digital payments. Think about that the next time you see a “credit card fee” added to your restaurant bill.

CIVIC SKINNY
Park positive. Good tippers. Big trees. A $300K median home price. And Iowa… works?

By CITYVIEW staff

Park place. Des Moines continues to be a solid destination for those looking to live within walking distance to a park. According to Trust for Public Land (TPL), a national nonprofit that helps create parks and protect public land, 75% of Des Moines residents live within a 10-minute walk to a park. The national average of the 100 most populous cities is 76%, while the national average for all urban cities and towns in the U.S. is 57%. It also says 13% of Des Moines land is used for parks. The national median is 15%.

ParkServe, a park mapping service used by TPL, says Des Moines has 201 total parks and 7,465 total park acres. The website’s interactive map shows how many acres TPL has preserved and how many projects they have completed in the state. North Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa are the only states to have zero in both categories. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, considering the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation has helped protect more than 200,000 acres of Iowa’s landscape. …

Green embraces cultural exchange

By Lindsey Giardino

Mary Ann Green’s first encounter with AFS Intercultural Programs, an international youth exchange organization, came during a weekend event hosted by AFS in Winterset. Green agreed to host three students from three different countries for just a few days. This was in 1997, and, at the time, her oldest daughter was in 10th grade.

By the 1999–2000 school year, Green and her family had taken the next step: hosting a student from Germany for nine months.

Since then, she has welcomed a total of eight exchange students for full school years through AFS, and four more through the Iowa Lions Youth Exchange Program, which brings international students to the United States for the month of July.  ...
