Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“If we have the death penalty, it should be carried out on the town square, for the public to see (Capital punishment, July 16, 2025). The things done in the name of the people should be transparent, and the community — ages 5-95 — ought to see the consequences of particular actions. That said, I oppose it because the appeals process is long, often a decade or more, and more frequently than we realize, facts arise over time that result in a death row inmate being exonerated. I prefer life without parole.” - Brad

I am all for transparency, but I don’t feel the need to see a public hanging. - Shane

“Great column, Shane. I agree that jail can be a positive alternative to the, well, alternative (Capital punishment, July 16, 2025). Punishment is always a learning experience, whether it be good or bad and how you react to it.” - James

We can certainly all keep learning. And, sometimes, death is too easy of a solution to problems. - Shane

“You can have fun doing anything as long as you have the right attitude going into it (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025).” - Chuck

Right on, Chuck. Except for root canals. There is nothing fun about a root canal. - Shane

“Found on a gravestone in Woodland Cemetery — ‘Words Suggest, Actions Show’ (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025).” - Mike

I like that one. And I will be using it. Maybe not on my tombstone, but I will find a time or two to share that one while I am still kicking. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. I just heard this one last evening on a TV show. You have likely heard it before, but I had not (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025). I believe it encompasses my approach to life and business. ‘Say YES and figure it out later.’ That approach has served me well. Thank you for your newsletter.” - Robin

I tend to agree, along with “Always Bite Off More Than You Can Chew.” - Shane

“Shane, I enjoy reading your column. It must be challenging to keep coming up with topics and keeping it fresh enough for your readers. Keep up the good work. Some quotes for pile (Quotes to share, July 17, 2025): ‘Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game,’ - Babe Ruth; ‘Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence,’ - Vince Lombardi; ‘Don't tell me how rocky the sea is, just bring in the darn ship,’ - Lou Holtz; and ‘Be a game changer. The world is already full of players," - Anonymous.” - Scott

You hit the jackpot with those great quotes. Thanks, Scott. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Chinese food? U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that 277,000 acres of American farmland are now owned by Chinese entities. Surprised? Smithfield and Syngenta are Chinese-owned now, too.

Patrón in February drew the ire of Mexico’s Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), the governing body that regulates the production and authenticity of tequila, with Patron's promise of “100% Additive-Free Tequila.” Weeks later the CRT revoked Patrón’s export certificate, preventing cases of its tequila from entering the U.S. for days. The CRT had warned brands last year against using terms like “additive-free,” pointing out that additives can comprise up to 1% of a tequila by weight without having to be disclosed under Mexican law. “Additive-free” terminology confuses consumers, the group said. The whole truth has a way of doing that. (WSJ)

BUSINESS FEATURE
The business of malls

By Cyote Williams

Popularity and ease of access have made online retailers increasingly attractive for shoppers. According to Shopify, an e-commerce site where businesses can sell their products, global e-commerce sales are forecast to grow from $5.13 trillion in 2022 to $8.09 trillion by 2028. That’s a lot of money, and a good portion of it was originally spent in traditional retail outlets, like shopping malls.

That, among other factors, has caused a major upheaval in what the shopping mall scene looks like in the Des Moines metro and everywhere. Here locally, stalwarts like Merle Hay Mall and Southridge Mall are taking major steps to revitalize their plots to bring people back in. What was once the new kid on the block, Jordan Creek Mall, is now more than 20 years old but still finding success. The Outlets of Des Moines offers shoppers a different experience than a traditional shopping mall. Each faces its own challenges when it comes to operations, bringing people in and improvements. ...

New Hope Church helps hurricane victims
Provides support to people of Hendersonville, North Carolina.

By Rich Wicks

Most Iowans have never experienced the widespread devastation that a hurricane can inflict upon a community. But members of New Hope Church in Adel not only recognized the need in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, they chose to do something about it.
The church hosted two fundraiser events to help those in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The first event was a “Souper Bowl” meal. The second was a cornhole tournament in late March.

Office Manager Michelle Jenkins and Executive Pastor Ben Alison spoke of the fundraising and the hands-on help to hurricane victims.

“What was so devastating about the flooding is that a lot of the people did not have flood insurance,” Alison says. ...
