In both cases, the U.S. seems to have more layers of middlemen taking their cut between farm, or lab, and table.
Science Advances magazine reported that the killer bird virus HPAI is showing remarkable adaptability. The impact on ecological, animal and human health is “substantial,” because it could lead to a host of “range expansion and human infections,” according to the researchers. The most recent spread of HPAI that began in February 2022 affected more than 180 million birds in North America before spreading to other mammals in the last year including humans, dairy cows, cats, dogs and foxes according to USDA and other researchers.
