Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, how about Santana’s debut album cover (Album art, July 2, 2025)? One of my favorites.” - Curtis

That is a cool cover. I am still looking for images in the lion’s mane. - Shane

“Shane, after reading your thoughts on the ‘less than’ portion (Less than, July 8, 2025), I was ready to get an old school bus, tear out the seats and put in bean bag chairs, beads, some good sitar jams and head west on Route 66 with about 20 other SHANEHEADS, but then I figured you would be the one who brought the Kool-Aid.” - Chuck

I had to look up what a sitar is, but the old school bus, bean bag chairs and beads sound good to me. Hold the Kool-Aid, though. - Shane

“I never knew why corn was detasseled (Detasseling corn, July 15, 2025). Thank you for that info. But I do remember a friend of mine in high school spending her summer detasseling. She hated it. And with the money she got, she bought a blood-red sweater and skirt for herself because she said it was from blood money.” - Margaret

I just wanted money from detasseling so I could see “Raiders of the Lost Ark” at the theater, buy a pepperoni pizza and play a few games of Asteroids. - Shane

“I am in favor of the death penalty but without execution (Capital punishment, July 16, 2025). Giving a life sentence with no parole means the convict knows there will be tomorrows. With a death penalty — date uncertain — the convict never knows if that could happen tomorrow or next week or next month. Imagine the mental anguish of going to bed each night not knowing if the execution will be tomorrow or the next day? At some point, this might become too much for the convict to bear and he/she could request completion of the sentence.” - Chuck

Now, that’s a simple revision I have not heard before, and I like how you think. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM KCCI: Iowa public media faces historic funding cuts. Iowa's public media are bracing for historic funding cutbacks as Congress considers a bill that could cut $9 billion in taxpayer dollars to foreign aid and public broadcasting. The Senate passed the bill with a narrow margin of 51 to 48, with two Republicans voting against it. The junk food empire fights back, part IV
Coca Cola announced Wednesday that it will bring back real sugar to U.S. Coke. Real sugar was removed from the recipe in 1984 and replaced with high fructose corn syrup. Coincidentally, that was the same year that U.S. diabetes and obesity incidents began climbing. Corn farmers won't like this but MAHA moms will.

The junk food empire is fighting back.

ART NEWS
Firelei Báez delivers ‘the money shot’

By Jim Duncan

The late Des Moines artist Don Dunagan liked to say, “Artists are somewhat cool, but art thieves get the hot girls.” He had a point. I asked my Internet Movie Database (IMDb) app how many movies have been made about artists, and it returned 75. The same question about art thieves returned 96.

There is certainly more action and glamour in the process of stealing art compared to creating it, but this still seems strange. Ever since Vincenzo Perugia stole Leonardo’s “Mona Lisa” from Paris’ Louvre Museum in 1911, art thieves have been celebrated by most media. In fact, “Mona Lisa” was little known outside the art world before that theft. Perugia and “Mona” became uber-famous remaining at large for two years before they were caught. His defense claimed he was just returning the painting to Italy and that Napoleon was the real thief. That worked. Perugia spent just seven months in jail.    ....

Meet Jes Young
Counselor is transitioning from elementary to middle school post.

By T.K. West

Jes Young knew she wanted to pursue a career connected to counseling, she just was not sure exactly what she wanted to do. After graduating from Iowa State University, Young worked at Easter Seals of Iowa while attending Drake University for a master’s degree in counseling. She was hired by the Waukee Community School District after graduation and has been a counselor in the district for 15 years.

"I would say one of my favorite things about working in Waukee is there is always room to continue to learn and grow as a professional. Whether it is through changing roles within your building, across the district to a new building or completely evolving into new opportunities, Waukee is always evolving and growing to allow for staff to constantly learn and grow as well,” Young says.  ...
