Good morning to you!

The state of Florida made headlines recently with a new law aiming to prevent attacks on national and state leaders. The law comes from, at least in part, the assassination attempt on President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania campaign rally, as well as related issues in Florida. The legislation makes assassination attempts on heads of state, including the president, vice president, any state governor or bystanders, automatically eligible for the death penalty. In Florida, politicians’ lives seem to have more value than the rest of ours. Meanwhile, Florida has eight executions scheduled in 2025.

In Iowa, capital punishment was banned in 1965 when Gov. Harold Hughes signed a bill that abolished it. Gov. Terry Branstad made reinstatement of the death penalty central to his 1994 reelection campaign, but none of the measures were able to pass both houses of Iowa’s state legislature. All other attempts have failed as well.

Iowa carried out 46 executions prior to 1965 — 43 for murder and three for rape. One of the most notable occurred in 1845 when brothers William and Steven Hodges were hanged together for murder. Another was in 1858 with the hanging of William Hinkle, which gathered 15,000 people, reportedly the largest crowd for any event west of the Mississippi at the time.

Many Iowans, and some current legislators, believe capital punishment should be reinstated. Public opinion surveys show that a majority of Iowans tend to favor it, but support drops to 50% when respondents are asked whether they prefer death or life with no chance for parole as punishment. For some who oppose killing of any sort, life without parole is a more acceptable answer. Others who understand the time and costs associated with the appeals processes for capital punishment agree.

A few decades ago, I listened to an elderly pastor preach on the subject. He said he had a cousin who was an executioner at a prison. He shared how the stress of being the one to pull the switch was so immense that his cousin committed suicide, as did many others in the same position. The pastor’s message was simple: Let anyone who supports capital punishment be the one to pull the switch.

If a heinous crime was committed against me or a family member of mine, I would not want the death penalty for the offender. That was not always my opinion, but it is today. I did not arrive at this view for a moral reason. Instead, I simply believe death is too easy for these serious offenders. I want them to sit in solitude for decades, thinking about what they have done, feeling the mental anguish and fearing what is in store for them upon their eventual death. Some may call this vengeful. To some degree, it is. I am OK with that.

Meanwhile, we Iowans should continue to follow the aftermath in Florida and elsewhere as we all learn how to properly deal with these situations. Our opinions may change, but, unfortunately, the heinous crimes won’t.

Have a watchful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
USA restaurant bankruptcies last year hit the highest level in decades (excluding 2020 when the COVID pandemic upended the industry). TGI Fridays, Rubio’s Coastal Grill and Red Lobster were among chains that filed for Chapter 11, closing hundreds of restaurants. The pace of bankruptcies has slowed this year, with 10 restaurant chains or large operators pursuing Chapter 11 filings through May. (BankruptcyData.com)

The shakeout in casual dining continues as brands such as Denny’s, Applebee’s and Hooters close locations in efforts to improve profitability. Restaurant locations run by the largest casual-dining chains dropped 1.2% last year, the first unit decline since 2020, according to market-research firm Technomic. Red Lobster emerged from bankruptcy last September with new leadership and a fresh influx of cash from private-equity firm Fortress Capital. Cracker Barrel and Red Lobster are working to stage a comeback by spending millions to update menus and dining rooms. Cracker Barrel's new CEO has slashed the amount of merchandise sold in their stores and concentrated on low prices and comfortable seating. Low prices have protected sector leaders Chili's and Texas Roadhouse from the slump. (WSJ)

Snoberger and Riggs respond during disasters
As part of Iowa Task Force One, duo helps find human remains.

By Rich Wicks

Tasha Snoberger and her dog, Riggs, provide a service that is largely unseen but vitally important. The two are part of a team volunteering for Iowa Task Force One.

“Iowa Task Force One is a state agency designed to be a search and rescue team. Within that team, there are different groups that help in different disasters and situations. I’m called a canine search specialist, and when there is a natural disaster or building collapse or whatever, our team can be deployed.”

Snoberger explains how she and Riggs became a part of the team.

“I got into search and rescue with my dog, because of the caliber of dog he is. I sought out a particular dog to start doing this with,” Snoberger says. “I’ve had Riggs since he was a puppy, and he just turned seven. He is an HRD dog, a Human Remains Detection dog, so we are deployed for any case where it’s expected the subject is deceased. We also have live-find teams.” ...
