Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Here are a few album choices from my brother (Album art, July 2, 2025), who was also born in 1968 and is a Vikings fan: Little River Band’s ‘Greatest Hits’; ‘Ghost In The Machine’ by The Police; and ‘Some Girls’ by The Rolling Stones.”- Patty

I like your brother already. - Shane

“Shane, I enjoyed the LP Cover Art column (Album art, July 2, 2025). There has been great art over the past half-century. I could send more, but here are a few to add: ‘Malice in Wonderland’ by Nazareth; ‘Rotten to the Core’ by Crabby Appleton; ‘Are You Experienced’ by The Jimi Hendrix Experience; ‘Freak Out’ by The Mothers of Invention; and ‘Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake’ by Small Faces.” - Kirk

The last one is new to me. You have inspired me to check it out. - Shane

“Hey, Shane! Lots of your favorite albums are definite classics and will be remembered until the end of time (Album art, July 2, 2025). The wall going downstairs to my man cave has many more. Music is a big part of my life as well. I even recently tattooed five of my favorite bands' logos on my arm.” - Jay

Jay, you are clearly committed to your music, and I like it. - Shane

“More quality meals with true friends and family (More, July 7, 2025). Great food is one thing, but a memorable chance to remember the past, discuss the future and laugh at our youthful ignorance. More travel to visit old friends and make new ones. More chances to teach not preach so my mistakes are not others’. More not having anything that requires batteries or power. More flexibility, not only in an old worn out/used/bionic repaired joints but in being able to bend with the times or requests or some wishes.” - Rex

Those all hit home with me. - Shane

“You have shaped the Daily Umbrella into an appealing, thought-provoking and engaging weekday rest stop. It will continue to expand its footprint with others. Today’s “Less” column triggered an aha moment for me (Less, July 8, 2025). I believe that what I have been longing for is not ‘the good ol’ days,’ as they are never replicable, but a return to the character-based standards that were demonstrated by our parents, grandparents and other forebears. I had three uncles who served in WWII, members of the Greatest Generation. They survived the war and became contributors to their communities and world. They were as different as snowflakes, but each held basic tenets of honor, respect and character that seem to have dissipated in today’s world. Thanks for making your readers think.” - John

Maybe “the good ol’ days” are not replicable, and there certainly were bad days in those good days, but recalling and trying to relive them is not a bad thing — at least not in my eyes. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

FROM WOI: Iowa officials, businesses anticipate flooding as threat looms. The chance for heavy rainfall Thursday night into Friday, predicted by the Local 5 weather team, is bad news for some outdoor businesses and cities. FILM REVIEW
Go on a cosmic misadventure with Pixar’s ‘Elio’

By David Rowley

“Elio” PG | 97 minutes Directors: Adrian Molina, Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi Writers: Julia Cho, Mark Hammer, Mike Jones Stars: Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly

Blast off for a vibrant, heartwarming adventure that proves original storytelling still has a place in today’s entertainment landscape. While it may not reach the emotional heights of Pixar’s very best like “Inside Out” or “Coco,” “Elio” delivers a thoroughly entertaining experience that will delight younger audiences with that childhood sense of wonder about the universe while telling a relatable story about finding where you belong.

From the opening scenes, the movie establishes its cosmic aspirations with a beautiful nod to space exploration history. A Carl Sagan voiceover speaks about the significance of Voyager I and how it was, among many things, the first spacecraft that was specifically designed to send out and receive messages from extraterrestrial life, which immediately sets a thoughtful tone that elevates the material.     ...
