Good morning to you!

Over and under. More than and less than. The difference between these words may seem miniscule to most of you, but it matters to us writers and editors and grammarians. The Associated Press has lightened up on its stylebook rules for the usage of these words, but I haven’t.

We use the word “over” when making a reference to one thing physically being above another thing. (The light is over the table.) But when we reference one number being greater than another, we use the words “more than.” (More than 400 people attended the event.). We employ the same logic with “under” and “less than” (or “fewer than”). (The chair is under the table.) (The female readership is less than 45%.)

That’s how we handle it. More or less.

All the discussion on these words got me thinking about what I would like to have more of and less of in my life. Let’s see if you can relate.

More faith. Prayer and meditation help me realize my flaws and work to improve on them in positive ways. An hour each week at my church is a good start, but I need more.

More reading. This comment may sound odd coming from a guy who spends most of his day reading, but I want to find ways to read for enjoyment, too — and not on a computer screen.

More exercise. I simply need to sweat more and burn off calories. I know this, and my doctor reminds me, too.

More sleep. Each day, I seem to wake up a little earlier. I was told this would happen as I aged, and it most certainly has. As such, I need to get to bed earlier to be sure I am getting plenty of rest.

More time. I realize we all have the same amount of time in our days. It’s how we spend that time that makes the difference. My schedule can get eaten up by others, and I make the mistake of letting that happen too often. I am learning to say no more frequently to what doesn't truly matter to me and say yes more often to what really does.

Well, these five things are a good start, more or less. And speaking of less, check out tomorrow’s column for a few things I — and maybe you — would like to have less of.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Starting Monday, the water utility agency said it will permit sod and turf businesses to use up to one million gallons daily to keep new grass pallets alive as they bond with the soil. Back to the Biz
Cracker Barrel, which has struggled with sales declines, last year cut dividends to plow millions of dollars into initiatives to update the brand. Since joining the chain from Taco Bell in 2023, new boss Felss Masino has pruned the number of retail goods sold, added restaurant booths and rolled out beer and wine offerings. Last week, Wall Street Journal wrote about Cracker Barrel customers who missed the old stuff, particularly the rocking chairs, and don't notice the new stuff.

Last week, Axios reported "Iowa's $0.19 per gallon beer tax is among the lowest in the nation." Tax Foundation ranks Iowa's beer tax as 32nd lowest. That foundation is clear about their point: "The different layers of taxation on production and distribution combine to make up about 40% of the retail price of beer."

FEATURE STORY
2025 CHOICE Awards

By Jim Duncan

Inspired by Japan’s Living National Treasures, the idea for CITYVIEW’s CHOICE awards originated 11 years ago. The Japanese program honors “preservers of important intangible cultural properties.” In the years after World War II, anxiety arose in Japan that their unique cultural traditions — noh, kabuki, origami, kumi, sumo, teapot ceramics, noodle making — might be swamped by the conquering Western culture. By honoring revered exemplars of those arts, they preserved them and made them important to a new generation.

Our intention at CITYVIEW was to do something similar for Iowa’s venerable, living food treasures. That evolved into a hall of fame for people and institutions that bestow a singular quality and identity on our city and state. CITYVIEW’s Hall of Iowa Culinary Excellence (CHOICE) awards began when locals rued the passing of two of the most memorable food icons in Iowa history. The Younkers Tea Room was lost in a fire, and Dahl’s stores were sold or closed. ...

Favorites, food and family fun
It’s Dallas County Fair time.

By Rachel Harrington

For the past year, The Dallas County Fair Board has been preparing for the upcoming county fair July 8-12, and it is excited to share the highlights and new events that will be available for the community’s enjoyment. Fair Board Secretary Sherry James shares that, this year, there will be no gate admission fee or fee for parking, and the carnival will be absolutely free as well, thanks to sponsors. Families can come and enjoy all the carnival rides without the burden of admission or ride tickets.

One of the main highlights of this year’s Dallas County Fair will be the Mutton Bustin’ and Rodeo in the south arena on Thursday night. Free entertainment will abound all around the entertainment plaza in the middle of the fairgrounds. Returning crowd favorites will include magic shows by Shaun Jay Magic, firefighter shows, the Bill Reilly talent show Tuesday afternoon, Xtreme Strong Man, and City Council Barnyard Olympics. There will also be the 4-H/FFA BBQ on Tuesday evening at the county fair.  ...
