Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I was going to the grocery store the day I read about your new Senior View magazine (Senior View, June/July 2025). I looked for it, and sure enuf, there it was. Happy to see it. Downsizing was a good topic. I am still downsizing after selling the house and two later moves and could have used some of the helping services mentioned. I like the stories and the puzzle pages. Keep it up.” - Margaret

We will do our best. Thanks, Margaret. - Shane

“My favorite movie theme is ‘Chariots of Fire’ by Vangelis, who composed it for the 1981 Academy Awards Best Picture winner (Name that tune, June 30, 2025). Every time I hear the first six notes, I either want to rewatch the movie and/or go out for a long run!” - Rich

On the beach? Dressed in white? In slow motion? Me, too. - Shane

“Shane, I enjoyed your recent column (Name that tune, June 30, 2025), especially your observation that you ‘find it amazing that our brains can identify so many songs in just a few notes,’ and yet we struggle to remember so many other things. I am also intrigued by the relationship between our memories and music. I once heard a pastor preach a sermon on the role of music in the Bible. He observed that few of us can recite a poem we have heard or read, but if you set those verses to music, most of us can remember all the lyrics to our favorite songs.” - Bob

And thanks to Schoolhouse Rock, I know the words to the Preamble to the United States Constitution. - Shane

“Although retired, I get my share of emails — some advertisement emails I probably signed up for (the reasons escape me now), some personal, a good share of them relating to the committees, councils, etc. that I am currently a part of (Email ground zero, July 1, 2025). Long ago, I learned to create a specifically named Outlook folder for any I just MAY want to reference later. You have no idea how many times I access a folder, do a word search and locate the info I remembered. At any given time, my inbox hardly has any emails, my deleted file has lots and the folders that I deemed important, at the time anyway, have plenty. This has certainly worked for me!” - Diane

That sounds good… until your email software crashes and you lose all those files. Unfortunately, I speak from experience. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Huge new demand for drugs. It’s not what you think
Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that companies trying to outsmart possible tariffs have air shipped $36 billion worth of diabetes-obesity drug hormonal materials from Ireland to the U.S. this year. That’s more than double the total shipped all of last year. These peptide and protein-based hormones feed into a category of drugs that include GLP-1 and newer types of insulin known as analogues. Drug companies like Eli Lilly have been making hormones in Ireland for decades because of low corporate taxes.

All together, the $36 billion drug shipments weighed 23,400 pounds – less than the weight of four Tesla E trucks. “A very big part of the U.S.-EU trade deficit is accounted for by Ireland alone,” WSJ concluded.

The junk food empire is seriously wounded by these popular drugs which curb appetites. On top of that, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. is trying to force the empire to quit using petroleum dyes and other unnatural ingredients in their products.

DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
80/35 Musical Festival

By Kristian Day

This is my first July in Des Moines without the 80/35 Musical Festival (excluding the two pandemic years). I know it was not just one factor that ended this nearly 20-year run in Des Moines. When I am having an emotionally charged discussion about this, I often put the blame on the move from downtown to Water Works Park., but that’s an unfair statement to make.

From 2012-2014, I ran a music blog called “Iowa Music Buzz” (RIP). This was six years before “Iowa Basement Tapes” hit the airwaves and five years before my first column in CITYVIEW. “Iowa Music Buzz” had interviews, reviews and photography that was 100% contributed by volunteers.  ...

Giving back in retirement
Durham finds joy in helping others.

By Lindsey Giardino

In her retirement, Betsy Durham keeps busy volunteering.

Through Norwalk Christian Church, she helps serve one of its core ministries: the English Language Learners ministry. Started in 2017, the initiative teaches English to refugees and immigrants and raises funds for college scholarships for their children (one of the first scholarship recipients just graduated from the University of Iowa).

The ministry began after AMOS Iowa — a coalition of institutions throughout Central Iowa that organize for justice and the common good — had conversations with Norwalk schools and identified a need for English teaching. Many parents of students were having trouble communicating with the school due to language barriers.   ....
