Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Regarding your hotel column (Hotel expectations, June 17, 2025), I want to be able to get in the bed. They are so tall, they should have step stools. The last hotel I was at, the top of the bed was at waist level.” - Gail

Climbing into the beds isn’t as bad as falling out of them. - Shane

“We are slowly losing the battle of small bottles of toiletries (Hotel expectations, June 17, 2025). The big jugs that are not tamper-proof I believe are now mandated in Maine. There's an idea, Mr. Entrepreneur — sample-size, TSA-approved toiletry containers with your corporate logos on them. I'd feel more refreshed in the morning after using my body wash from a ‘Daily Umbrella’-labeled reusable bottle. Or ‘CITYVIEW’ shampoo. Or ‘Ankeny Living’ lotion that would make the sore spots on my tushy less irritated as I sit in construction traffic.” - John

John, I think you might be on to something. Or on something. - Shane

“My wife, 36 years ago as of June 24, began what appears to be a lifelong repurposing project – me (Repurposing, June 18, 2025). I am ever grateful.” - Brad

Some projects are just never finished. - Shane

“Just wait until you are 78 and you know there is no doubt you are the oldest person in the room (SENIORVIEW, June 2025). Just finished reading SENIORVIEW, great addition to your line up.” - Mike

Thank you, Mike. I certainly hope I can experience that at age 78. - Shane

“Great publication (SENIORVIEW, June 2025)! Topics on point. Articles are so appropriate that I'm re-reading. Ads are relatable.” - Carol

That is exactly what we were hoping for when we launched this publication. Thank you for the feedback, Carol. - Shane

“Shane, congrats on the launch of another great publication (SENIORVIEW, June 2025)! Several of us have already enjoyed SENIORVIEW and look forward to reading it many times. I always love the articles Jackie Wilson writes. She captures the essence of interviews wonderfully! Thank you for all your publications.” - Judy

I appreciate those comments, and I know Jackie will, too. Thank you, Judy. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Local news
Jesse's Ember's is now serving lunch again Tuesday through Friday.

Corporate news
Brian Niccol moved from big success at Chipotle, which outperformed all competitors in the COVID era, to big challenges at Starbucks. Last month, he held the first Global Barista Championships at his National Leadership Council in Las Vegas. He said the idea was to "celebrate the roots of Starbucks culture — the neighborhood coffee shop and the people who make it special." 14,000 of 367,000 Starbucks employees were invited.

Niccol told Fox Business that his "Back to Starbucks - connection for lonely times" campaign will bring back the company's old policy of writing messages on cups. And that banana vanilla and chocolate cold foams are being introduced to make coffee more summer-friendly.

McD's recently settled a $10 billion lawsuit concerning advertising allocations for Black-owned media. Recent earnings reports show a decline in McD's sales and customer traffic, with the company experiencing its worst quarterly sales drop in the U.S. since the COVID pandemic. Krispy Kreme sued McD for divorce this week saying the relationship wasn't working for them. Don't forget that Chipotle broke up with McD and flourished on their own.

McD's is doing the worst in U.S. in sales among their fast food class, where price increases have eroded its being perceived as a value.

Kroger announced it would close 60 stores in their chain for "underperforming."

Surviving and thriving
Local cancer survivors share their stories of strength and resilience.

By Sean Dengler

As has been widely reported in recent months, Iowa continues to have the second highest age-adjusted rate of new cancers in the U.S. and is one of only two states — the other being Kentucky — with a rising rate, according to the Cancer in Iowa Report produced by the Iowa Cancer Registry (see full report here). An estimated 21,200 Iowans will be diagnosed with new, invasive cancers this year. Yet, with cancer screenings and improved treatment methods, more Iowans are joining the estimated 171,535 cancer survivors living in the state now.

A whirlwind
Shirley Ryan says, when you mix a derecho, COVID and cancer, it can be quite a whirlwind.

“ First of all, I was losing my job,” she says. “I was living in Cedar Rapids at the time, and I wanted to get all my things done like my annual checkup and all that good stuff. I had moved it up a little bit.”

Ryan, who was 63, had been watching television more during COVID and noticed that her neck looked different from the actors she was watching. ...
