Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, it sounds like our green thumbs are comparable in skill level (Poison hemlock, June 11, 2025). Growing up, whenever I would ask my Dad, ‘Is that is a weed?’ he would reply, ‘The only difference between a flower and a weed is perspective.’ Ten years ago, after purchasing my current home, I found the backyard covered with a light blue, even purplish, plant. It did not grow very tall and provided great ground cover to our steeply sloped back yard. A friend was visiting one day and informed me that was creeping Charlie, and it was a weed. Long story short, I got rid of the creeping charlie and have struggled getting grass to grow in the especially shaded, steeply sloped backyard for the last nine years. I think Garfield (comic) said it best, ‘The difference between a weed and a flower is the will to live.’ Thank you again for daily thought-provoking column!” - Kris

We could all learn a little from Garfield. - Shane

“I like your thinking, lived it for 20 years! (Show up, pull the wagon, and know it’s a journey, June 12, 2025). The part about having your managers on board was the biggest learning curve in making it happen. Sometimes you find out you need to make a change. Have a good one.” - Rich

Well, as I stated, we may not always like the inspections, but they are necessary for growth and improvement.” - Shane

“Excellent and thought-provoking commentary in today's DU, Shane (Show up, pull the wagon, and know it’s a journey, June 12, 2025).” - John

Thank you, John. We all tend to make mountains out of molehills, but, more often than not, the solutions to our problems are quite simple. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. This is so spot on — about everything (Show up, pull the wagon, and know it’s a journey, June 12, 2025). Do you mind if I share much of this with my client base?” - Robin

As always, share as you see fit, Robin. - Shane

“I look forward to your column every day (Show up, pull the wagon, and know it’s a journey, June 12, 2025). Today, I loved your three pointers on how to make the Best Better (the 4-H slogan). COVID was probably the worst thing that could happen to this country and left disastrous consequences for us. Reality is whatever you end up doing, so you must talk about the unintended consequences, too. Your comments are well done and so true. I am glad you did a column on it, as we sometimes forget the basics we need to do to make it all work. Thank you. It is good to have you at the helm.” - Kay

Those unintended consequences do seem to show up. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Clear Mortgage meteorology

Expect a hot and mostly dry 7‑day stretch in Des Moines this week. Highs peak in the upper 90s on Saturday and Sunday with sunny skies and gusty winds — conditions that could pose serious heat‑related risks if you’re outside for long. Monday brings similar heat but with increasing clouds and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. By Tuesday and Wednesday, storms become more likely, and highs dip slightly to the upper 80s and mid‑80s with elevated humidity. Be sure to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and be prepared for afternoon storms early next week.

Retired racing dogs

By Jackie Wilson

One might imagine greyhounds, known for their speed, want to race day in and day out.

Yet Dylan and Catherine Lyons discovered, in the case of their greyhounds, it is not true. After they adopted their greyhounds, Buddy and Han, Dylan thought he would be a runner when he took them for a walk.

“It’s more like a leisurely stroll. They are sprinters and not marathoners,” he explains. “They’re more like couch potatoes.”

The Lyons adopted Buddy in 2016 and Han in 2018 from the Heartland Greyhound Association. The HGA works with owners of racing greyhounds. The top-performing dogs race about two to four years. When the dog is retired from racing, the HGA helps dogs find a home.   ...

Meet Jenn Chapman
Lifelong learner turned educator

By Lindsey Giardino

Ever since she was a young child, Jenn Chapman has been passionate about learning.

“I recognized that, as a teacher, I would have endless opportunities to keep learning, as well as the chance to instill that love in others,” she says.

Chapman followed that path to Brigham Young University, where she graduated in 2006 with a degree in elementary education.

Her first position after college was as a long-term substitute for an Adel Elementary teacher who was going on maternity leave. ...
