Good morning to you!

How often do you stay in a hotel, and what are your expectations when you do? A 2024 survey commissioned by the American Hotel and Lodging Association and conducted by Morning Consult found most Americans (53%) planned to travel overnight for leisure during the next four months and 32% planned to travel overnight for business. That’s a lot of hotel stays.

With that much travel and overnight accommodations, expectations and opinions abound. Earlier this year, Accent Amenities published “The Psychology of Hotel Amenities: What Guests Really Want.” In it, they listed out the following seven hotel guest expectations:

  • Hygiene is stated as the most important thing guests want in their stay at any hotel. Hard to argue with that.
  • Comfort is key, they claim. The article shares how many guests are traveling for a long time, which tires them and they simply want a comfortable place to stay.
  • Convenience. Many hotel guests are said to want to visit scenic locations or the must-visit places of a city and expect hotels to be at a convenient distance from such locations.
  • Affordable pricing. The article notes how guests want to save as much as they can, especially by getting cheaper hotel rooms.
  • Friendly staff. No one likes to be talked to rudely. Enough said.
  • Safety and security. Guests want their luggage, money and other stuff to be safe. Yep.
  • Basic amenities that include dining and refreshments, Wi-Fi, privacy and toiletries are expected, too.
I have seen more hotel "wants" to add that may or may not be included in some way above.
  • I want my room key card to work — the first time. Having to go back down to the front desk to get a new room key is not a good way to start a hotel stay.
  • I appreciate the ice machine in the hallway, but I don’t want to hear it refilling throughout the night.
  • I want an elevator that works, because, although I could use the exercise, I really don’t want to lug my bags up seven flights of stairs.
  • I want a cool room with an AC unit that doesn't wake me up every time it turns on or off.
  • I want shades or curtains that pull all the way shut, not letting the streetlight peer through and hit me right in the eyes.
  • I would say that I want comfortable pillows, but I gave up on this and now bring my own whenever I can.
  • I want to know my costs up front and not be surprised by extra charges or taxes on my final bill.

I am not a finicky traveler. I simply want to be able a good night’s sleep. And who doesn’t? How about you? What are your hotel guest expectations? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a terrific Tuesday, and thanks for reading.

FROM WHO-TV: Once nitrate levels come down, we might not be out of the woods, according to one Iowa expert. A ban on lawn watering across the Central Iowa Water Works system is staying in place. Staff said conservation efforts over the weekend helped to keep nitrate levels in drinking water within the Environmental Protection Agency’s limits. River conditions are also improving. Tests on Monday showed nitrate levels in the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers were down roughly 10% since Saturday.... READ MORE

FROM CITYVIEW: Graziano Brothers — in the place where it all began. In 1903, brothers Francesco, 21, and Luigi, 17, Graziano left their Calabrian hometown San Morello to emigrate to the U.S. Like many Calabrians before them, and many more later, their way winded to Des Moines. They found jobs working for the Great Western Railroad until 1912. Then they decided that Luigi, Louie by then, should open a business while Frank remained at the railroad as security till the business was profitable enough to support both families. ... JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Al Capone’s vault and the unopened lockbox

By Joe Weeg

“Directly beneath me, in this hotel’s rubble-strewn basement, a massive concrete chamber has been discovered and there is evidence to suggest that that vault once belonged to Al Capone, the richest and most powerful gangster of his time.”

So began Geraldo Rivera on April 21, 1986, in a much-watched live television show, as a sealed vault was opened in the basement of the Old Lexington Hotel in Chicago, the headquarters of “the notorious Al Capone.” I remember watching the two-hour special and loved the history and the drama. There was even a medical examiner present in case any dead bodies were discovered. But, ultimately, the vault revealed only a few empty bottles. Massive disappointment.   ...

The Statue of Liberty at Camp Dodge

By Mary Jane Paez, Johnston Historical Society

When a visitor comes to the Johnston Historical Museum and enters the Camp Dodge room, the first thing they see is a large, framed poster showing a human formation of 18,000 soldiers depicting the Statue of Liberty. There is more to the story.

The United States had declared its neutrality from a war going on in Europe that started in 1914. Finally, in 1917, the U.S. entered into World War I after numerous attacks on our merchant ships in the Atlantic. Camp Dodge was chosen as the induction and training center for all of the upper Midwest. Camp Dodge was chosen because the area was similar to the topography and weather of France where the battles were going on.   ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Jalen Williams pushes Thunder to brink of NBA Championship with 40-point outburst. Last March, during a few days in Oklahoma reporting out a magazine story, I asked Thunder officials a question: Who is the wild card? On paper, Oklahoma City was a juggernaut, a 68-win freight train, with the MVP leading the offense, waves of defenders backstopping the league’s stingiest defense. But the Thunder were young and inexperienced, and the Western Conference playoff field was filled with teams older and more experienced. Someone had to exceed expectations, I reasoned. ... But the excitement of pitching in his first game in nearly two years took over, the adrenaline that comes with performing in front of 50,000-plus people swept over him, and before he knew it, Ohtani was overextending himself. ... READ MORE

1885: Statue of Liberty arrives in New York Harbor. On June 17, 1885, the dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrives in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy. ... 1972: Watergate burglars arrested. In the early morning of June 17, 1972, five men are arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate, an office-hotel-apartment complex in Washington, D.C. In their possession were burglary tools, cameras and film, and three pen-size tear gas guns. At the scene of the crime, and in rooms the men rented at the Watergate, sophisticated electronic bugging equipment was found. Three of the men were Cuban exiles, one was a Cuban American, and the fifth was James W. McCord, Jr., a former CIA agent. That day, the suspects, who said they were “anti-communists,” were charged with felonious burglary and possession of implements of crime. ... READ MORE
