Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“My vote is for multiple breadboards, but some do have a handle (Breadboards, May 21, 2025). I have never considered using one for a paddle, though. Ouch. My bride and I have accumulated quite the collection of breadboards — wooden, plastic, silicone, large, medium and small. The larger one is used as insulator when crock-potting all day whilst on the counter. My father crafted some of the sturdiest breadboards known. When one of the bowling alleys in my hometown either changed out their lanes or went out of biz, my father made 2-foot by 2-foot cutting boards that were fixtures in our kitchen. Short of laser etching, nothing dinged, marred or sliced that surface. I have never seen anything similar, unless you consider butcher blocks.” - Rex

Bread bowling. Your dad may have been on to something. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. The two graduation gifts I still recall after 57 years were a typewriter and summer school (Best graduation gifts, May 28, 2025). The typewriter was from my fraternal grandparents. Summer school, I gifted myself. I spent one session trying to bolster my math skills. As life turned out, it did me little in the short run and nothing in the long run. However, the two summer sessions I spent sweating in un-airconditioned classrooms going from a ‘hunter-pecker’ to an acceptable typist when writing in both college and careers still pays me dividends. Using a tablet presently, I am a much better ‘h-p’ knowing where the finger goes without searching. Thanks for the memory.” - John

Ever wonder where that typewriter is now? - Shane

“Shane, similar to the monogrammed bath towels, I got a set of green bath towels (Best graduation gifts, May 28, 2025). Our high school colors were green and white (East Greene High School), and my classmate’s mom, who was also a middle school coach, said, ‘When you go off to college, don’t let anyone belittle you because you are from a small school. Remember what we taught you, and know your value. You are as tough and smart and as strong as anyone. These towels will remind you of that every day.’ Pretty darn good gift.” - David

The gift is great. The advice is even better. - Shane

“Just had this conversation with people my age (Best graduation gifts, May 28, 2025). We don't recall any high school graduation parties. We were expected to graduate with honors. Nothing to celebrate. No gifts either. When did that all change? Did the Vietnam War have something to do with it?” - Jim

I don’t see a tie to the Vietnam War, but I do see a connection to both materialism and everyone getting a ribbon. Even so, if it brings friends and family together, I am all for it. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Noodle news
Korean ramen has eclipsed Japanese ramen in U.S. sales. The difference is heat, as in chilies. Social media challenges and K Pop music are heavily involved. Japanese food is subtler than Korean — Japanese slang for Koreans translates to “garlic eaters.” It’s not a compliment. (WSJ)

Coffee politics. The South Korean presidential election was influenced by coffee talk. Victorious liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung saw his poll numbers plunge after saying “Cafés sell a cup of coffee for $6 while the cost of the beans to make that cup cost eight cents.” He was lambasted for being out of touch with the cost of running small businesses, aka capitalism. He had to walk his comment back after his poll numbers dropped 10 points as conservatives used it to suggest he was a communist sympathizer. What looked like a runaway ended up being a closer election. Lee admires North Korea and China and wants to cut many ties with the U.S. (NHK-Tokyo)

Each year, Keep Iowa Beautiful holds its Annual Photography Contest, inviting photographers to showcase Iowa’s natural and environmental beauty through their lenses and capture the essence of their favorite seasons in a creative and engaging way.

CITYVIEW reached out to the winning photographers for permission to reprint their photos and are including the entries of those who granted permission in this issue.

“Keep Iowa Beautiful’s annual photo contest is a great opportunity for photographers to capture and share the essence of Iowa’s story,” Andy Frantz, Keep Iowa Beautiful executive director, said. “We were truly impressed by the incredible quality and creativity of this year’s submissions. This contest not only highlights the immense talent of photographers across our state, but this year, we introduced a new category, Hometown Pride, to celebrate the spirit and character of the communities involved in our Hometown Pride Program.”  ...

Pampered pets
Residents share how they go the extra mile to spoil their pets.

By Ashley Rullestad

Many pet owners view their animal companions as part of the family — deserving of the best care, lots of attention, and at least a few perks. Besides the usual walks, pet beds and toys, some of these pampered pets get extra special treatment: pup cups from drive-throughs, birthday parties, paw soaks and a special place in those important days of their owners’ lives — as well as in their hearts.

National Parks pup
Don and Susan Sandor have had dogs throughout their relationship. In fact, they joke that they have had dogs longer than they have had children. Their current canine companion, Winston, has been with them since 2012 when they rescued him from a facility in Osceola.

“We were the third family to take him home because he was very mistrustful of everyone and everything,” Susan says. “He probably was mistreated at some point; he is still fearful of being picked up. He spent most of his time in a kennel and didn’t know how to play in a backyard.”  ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: How small-market Thunder and Pacers brought parity to the NBA Finals. Last week, as the Indiana Pacers celebrated their series-clinching win over the New York Knicks, NBA fans took to social media to offer smirking assessments of an Indiana–Oklahoma City NBA Finals. Among them: David Stern would hate this. Stern, the New York–born ex-NBA commissioner, who once (allegedly) steered Patrick Ewing to the Knicks, who once (actually) declared his preferred Finals matchup to be “Lakers vs. Lakers,” would have cringed at a matchup between two of the league’s smallest markets, or so the commentary went. “Total bulls---,” says a longtime team exec. “David would have loved this.” ... 1888: President Cleveland denies widow her husband’s military pension. On June 5, 1888, President Grover Cleveland vetoes a bill that would have given a pension to war widow Johanna Loewinger, whose husband died 14 years after being discharged from the army. Mr. Loewinger served in the Civil War, enlisting on June 28, 1861. He was discharged a little less than a year later for what the army surgeon’s certificate called chronic diarrhea. He received his pension until his death in 1876. After his death, his widow, Johanna, applied for a widow’s pension, but was denied since her husband died from suicide by cutting his throat with a razor and not from any long-term disability caused by his military service. Johanna claimed her husband had suffered from insanity triggered by his military service and felt entitled to the benefits.... READ MORE
