Good morning to you!

I have a foosball table in my garage. I know this not because I play a lot of foosball, but because I have numerous bruises from bumping into the handles each time I walk around it.

I would like to give the foosball table away. My wife insists we keep it. So far, she is winning — at least until she bumps into it and gets a bruise.

This isn’t our first foosball table. It might be our third or fourth. We have bought the tables used each time and then sold them when we moved, needed the space for something else, or I got tired of the bruises. My mom even bought my siblings and me a foosball table in the 1970s, but it was a flimsy model and eventually broke into pieces.

This game so many of us call foosball is more correctly named table football or table soccer. Smithsonian magazine calls it a “simple game of bouncing little wooden soccer players back and forth on springy metal bars across something that looks like a mini pool table.” That pretty much sums it up.

While it is debatable who the foosball inventor is, the first patent for the game was granted to Harold Searles Thornton of Britain in 1923. His uncle, Louis P. Thornton, a resident of Oregon, visited Harold in Britain and brought the idea back to the United States. He patented it in 1927, according to the Smithsonian article. Louis Thornton seemingly had little success with foosball, though. The patent expired, and the game quietly disappeared until the 1970s when it seemingly became an overnight craze.

Lawrence Patterson is the guy who brought foosball back to America. He was stationed in West Germany with the U.S. military in the early 1960s. He saw how this table football was so popular in Europe, and he contracted with a foreign manufacturer to construct a machine to export to the U.S. The first table was in America in 1962, and Patterson trademarked the name “foosball” in America and Canada.

Smithsonian pointed out how the crash of foosball happened even more quickly than its rise, thanks, mostly, to the growing popularity of arcade games. More than 1,000 tables per month were selling near the end of the 1970s. By 1981, those numbers dropped to 100 per month. And by 2025, only one remains — and it is in my garage, patiently waiting to give me another bruise.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Duh moment. The Japanese government admitted that auctioning off Strategic Rice Reserves had been ineffective at bringing down the price of rice. They didn't realize that an auction would bid up the price. They will now sell them directly to supermarkets at a fixed price. They are also importing rice from California, which is considered inferior but is a cheaper alternative.

U.S. cattle inventory hit a 70-year low in May. Sheep inventories are down, too. They've been going down since 1983 but continue to slide. Ranchers blame bad trade deals and call for country of origin labels on beef. Why on earth does our burger remain a mystery when we identify the country of origin of our underwear for all to see? Answer is the lobby power of Big Four packers who got it repealed in 2015. Those 5- and 10-pound tubes of burger you see with cheap prices are likely coming from another hemisphere, maybe two different hemispheres.

BELLY UP TO...
Smoking Goat Pub

By Jackie Wilson

“GOAT” doesn’t just refer to a hay-eating, climbing, hooved domestic animal. It is also an acronym — Greatest Of All Time — often referring to sports icons. Yet there is another GOAT in town. This one refers to a bar, The Smoking Goat Pub.

Located at 3015 Merle Hay Road, the place opened in June 2023 in a building that has housed several bars over the past four decades. Owners cleaned up and renovated the former Wisco Pub, including the front bar area that now features brick with a calming video screenscape of a fireplace.

Me versus me
Norwalk man completes epic journey.

By Darren Tromblay

Growing up was not easy in some respects for Norwalk’s Michael Howland. High school was a particular sore spot.

“I was bullied. I was always ashamed that I was not good at sports,” he admits.
It was a struggle within — especially for a teenager smack dab in the middle of his formative years. It was a difficult time. Despite the barbs from others, Howland managed to convince himself that all was not lost on the athletic front. Deep down, he knew he could do at least one thing: run.

“I could move; I could train myself to persevere and endure,” he says. ...
