Good morning to you!

Some things in life sneak up on you. Age is one of them. Not too many years ago, I remember being the youngest person in the room. Today, when I scan the faces of those in a group, I realize I am often the oldest person in the room. When did that happen?

I will turn 58 this summer. As such, I have been in the 55-plus age bracket for a few years now. I am not retiring anytime soon, though, as I plan to continue to work as long as I enjoy what I am doing. As of right now, I am having a lot of fun. But, like many of you reading this, my interests are changing.

As most of you know, our company publishes CITYVIEW magazine in Des Moines, 14 separate Iowa Living magazines in the suburbs, and our three Times publications in Guthrie County, as well as this Daily Umbrella email newsletter.

Recently, we have been working on plans to expand our CITYVIEW division, which also includes Relish DM, our guide to food and fine dining; Explore DM, our entertainment and visitors guide; and, soon, SENIORVIEW, our 55-plus lifestyles publication.

Our first issue of SENIORVIEW will publish in late June, and, if you are in the age of interest, we hope you will enjoy it. In our first issue, you will find a feature story on downsizing homes, a listing of things for active seniors to do, book reviews, TV program listings, events in the area, recipes, and a multitude of advice columns — and that’s just the beginning. We have a long list of topics to cover in the months ahead.

Speaking of the months ahead, you should know that SENIORVIEW will publish six times per year and will be available for free at hundreds of locations across central Iowa. You will also be able to find each digital issue online. The website will be live after the first issue publishes, and I will share the address then. If you would like, we can even email you a notice with a link when the first issue and each new issue is available. Sign up here. (Please know that we, unlike the Big Tech companies, will never share or sell your email address or any of your personal data to anyone else, ever.)

If you happen to own or operate a reputable business that could benefit by marketing your goods or services to the 55-plus age group, you can reach out to our SENIORVIEW sales manager, Aaron Burns, at aaron@dmcityview.com or 515-953-4822 ext. 330 for ideas on how to make our readers your customers.

Best of all, SENIORVIEW will be available for FREE in both print and digital versions. I am excited to bring this new publication to you. More details will come soon. In the meantime, be sure to sign up for the SENIORVIEW digital edition and encourage others to do the same.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Big news for Oak Park. Oak Park pastry chef Jess Robertson spent the weekend staging at Atelier Crenn, a Michelin 3-star restaurant in San Francisco. Jess was personally invited by Dominique Crenn, the French owner and chef who is the first female chef to win three Michelin stars in America.

Tony Lemmo shut down his Juniper Moon this last weekend. The bar was laid-back and old-fashioned plush — lots of Rat Pack music and couches, etc. Lemmo wants more time with his young girls and has now sold his interests in Gusto, Gusto Pizza Bar, Anna Dolce, Breakfast Club and Franks, too. Aposto is his sole restaurant now.

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Well, that was something

By Joe Weeg

“Well, that was something,” she said out of the blue on a Tuesday. A phrase she was fond of saying for nearly any event from the grand to the not-so-grand. Two days later, she died. My mom was nearly 98 years old.

You wouldn’t have known her, of course. My mom was a housewife most of her life. No awards. No claims to fame. No streets named in her honor. She was born, she lived, she died. In the in-betweens, she raised eight kids, buried a husband before he turned 50, cared for sick friends and a sick daughter for years, and cooked more than her fair share of pies, cinnamon rolls, pastries and thousands upon thousands of meals. The idea that food could be a love language was unimaginable for a child of the Depression. Food was survival. But food was her love language. Which was a boon for this pastry lover.  ...

Beyond books
Guntly champions the library.

By Lindsey Giardino

Ever since Deb Guntly’s kids were young, she has felt it was important to give back. Over the years, she’s done so in numerous ways — volunteering at her daughters’ school, serving as a Girl Scout leader for seven years, and acting as treasurer for both her church’s preschool and the elementary school her girls attended.

The list goes on. She’s contributed in a variety of ways at her church and has been a member of the West Des Moines Library Friends Foundation for the past two years.

“The library is one of my very favorite places to visit,” Guntly explains. “I feel safe and welcome there.”
