Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Are you familiar with penny press machines (The end of the penny, May 26, 2025)? There are more than 3,000 scattered across the country. As we travel, we often ‘pressed’ some pennies for our grandkids. They are good mementos. That business will pass as pennies become unavailable. Hmmm, maybe nickel machines will replace them.” - Chuck

We are going to have to find something to do with all those pennies. - Shane

“My high school graduation gift from my parents was two brand new suitcases (Best graduation gifts, May 28, 2025). By the time I graduated, I had been telling my parents for a few years that I had no desire to farm with Dad and wanted to go to college. They were farmers but had no problem with my desire to do something other than farming, so the suitcases were a practical gift.” - George

And not just one suitcase, but two? I guess they didn’t want you leaving anything behind. - Shane

“Shane, I think my most memorable gift was a 10 speed Schwinn bike that I bought with cash gifts (Best graduation gifts, May 28, 2025). It was my transportation for many months when I first moved from northwest Iowa to Ankeny to attend DMACC. The bike took me to the campus, and I even rode it from Ankeny to Johnston when I worked at The Convalescent Home for Children, now called ChildServe. I bought the bike from our local bike shop and still have it today. Another thoughtful gift was a nice address book. I use it still today to update loved ones’ and friends’ addresses so I can send cards or notes to them.” - Lu Anne

I love the bike story. How does one get included in that illustrious address books of yours? - Shane

“Shane, first of all, you’re testing my memory as I graduated in 1982. My favorite gift was from my parents (Best graduation gifts, May 28, 2025). Nothing too crazy… just a suitcase. It was the note inside that made a special. It read: ‘Kevin, we are excited to see where your future takes you but, always remember where home is. Please pack this suitcase and come visit us often! Love, Mom and Dad.’ And I did. I used that suitcase until it fell apart.” - Kevin

And then they moved and didn’t tell you. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Lest we forget
Joe Cimino's Wimpy's was a southside Italian dining magnet for nearly half the 20th century.

Popeye’s ran an April pickle menu including sandwich, lemonade, fried pickle chips, and wings with pickle sauce. That reminded pickle fanatics of other daring attempts to bring pickles into the junk food world whether they belong there or not. Here is a compilation: pickle pizza, pickle cotton candy, dill pickle chips, dill pickle Virginia peanuts, pickle cupcakes, spicy pickle vodka, dill-pickle-flavored ice cream, pickle sandwich, pickle corn dog, strawberry-Kool-Aid-flavored pickles, candied-flavored pickle chips, Flamin’ Hot dill pickle Cheetos, wicked pickle marshmallows and Dua Lipa’s pickle-and-jalapeño Diet Coke. Did we forget anything? (Delish)

FOOD DUDE
Los Laureles — it’s still the one

By Jim Duncan

In 1989, CITYVIEW predecessor Skywalker began publishing the column “Since I Quit Drinking.” It was a take on the Rip Van Winkle legend that used new sobriety as awakening to surprisingly new things for one who had been asleep for decades. One early column focused on a new store at East 15th and Grand called La Tienda Mexicana. It was the first Mexican grocery store in Iowa and the spark that ignited the firestorm of Iowa love for a new style of Mexican cuisine. ...

Meet Randi Glaser
STEM BEST award winner

As Randi Glaser teachers science classes at Walnut Creek Campus, she is constantly looking for ways to incorporate STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) challenges in the curriculum.

As a result of her dedication to STEM work, she was awarded a STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) Program award in 2024 by the Iowa Governor’s STEM Advisory Council. Only 29 school districts received the award. The award encourages teachers and industry professionals to work side-by-side to develop work-based
learning models that incorporate STEM subjects.

When the classroom is awarded STEM support, Glaser is quick to use it in her classroom.

“I always seek experiences and ideas,” she says. “In every unit, I attempt to do a STEM challenge to connect the unit outside the normal text.”  ...

FROM SPORTS ILLUSTRATED: Knicks, Brunson Keep Title Hope Alive With Authoritative Win Over Pacers in Game 5. The Knicks didn't hear no bell.
After falling into a 3-1 hole in the Eastern Conference finals against the Indiana Pacers earlier in the week, New York could have easily rolled over and died. After all, only 13 teams in NBA history have ever accomplished the feat. Instead, however, they took their backs-against-the-wall positioning to heart.
