Good morning to you!

I recently attended a Little League baseball game in a small town. I haven’t been to one in years, and I haven’t played in one in decades. Despite all the changes in the world, I was pleasantly surprised to see how much this great game has stayed the same.

Keep in mind that this baseball game was not part of an elite league but rather a city-run park and rec option. Everyone played, which was wonderful.

A few rules may have changed, but the game is basically the same. Strikes. Balls. Stolen bases. Home runs. Even the slightest of fans can generally follow along. The same can’t be said for football or hockey or wrestling. The simplicity of baseball is what makes it work — for participants and for fans.

Yes, some kids were wearing fancy uniforms while others were in basic blue jeans. And, as I recall from my own youth, some of the biggest hits came from the kids in denim.

What I was the most pleased with was the sportsmanship — from the players, coaches and fans. One of the teams that played had not won a game all year, but you would not have guessed it. The players were competitive, coachable and, even upon losing, congratulatory. Despite much of what we read, watch and hear about overbearing parents who often volunteer as overbearing coaches, that’s not what I saw. I watched coaches who were calm and collected and who were teaching life lessons to these young boys.

My coaches used to take us out for ice cream when we won — and sometimes when we lost, too. Many of us looked more forward to the ice cream than to the games, and that’s OK, too. I didn’t hang around after the game I attended to see if that trend was still popular, but I am guessing some version of it still is.

When I was a kid in the 1970s, a popular Chevrolet TV commercial promoted Americana with the theme of baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet. Much like the Little League game I attended, I loved it then — and I still love it today. Watch the video, and you will be smiling, too.

While you are at it, if you get a chance to watch a Little League game this summer, I encourage you to do so and to send me your thoughts and impressions.

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

The junk food empire strikes back, again.
The U.S. government is rolling out plans for making America healthy again at high speed. One week ago, a news conference of six cabinet secretaries included the Secretary of Defense. Because? So few high school graduates can pass military physicals (nearly 70% according to the Department of Health and Human Services) that health is now considered a matter of national security. The conference announced a crusade to rid children's diets of junk food, petroleum and particularly sugar and its many lab-created imitators — like the high fructose corn syrup that has walked so closely with obesity rates that they are often mistaken for each other.

Like all crusades, this one has sparked a defiant resistance. One rebel faction is led by JM Smucker which is sending a “Munchie Mobile” on road trips into MAHA territory to promote Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Donettes. The mobile force will hand out free junk food daily at 4:20 p.m. to align with the stoners it hopes to convert to the resistance.

COLLECTIONS & HOBBIES
Capoeira combines several art forms into one

By Cyote Williams

Capoeira is defined as an Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality. The combination may sound too good to be true. But, for Juan Loruido, it is his hobby and passion. He originally came across the art form while at Huntington Beach with a group of friends.

“We started to hear music and clapping and a sound we hadn’t heard before. As we got closer, that’s when I got to see what capoeira looked like. And it was very different. It captured my attention,” Loruido said. ...

Mary’s Helping Hands
Items for babies, moms in need

By Jackie Wilson

After Lauren Burke gave birth to her fourth and final child, she was ready to give away baby clothes and supplies.

Yet, as she tried to donate the items, she found nobody wanted them.

“They all wanted new clothes,” she recalls. “I thought, there has to be a place where people need baby clothes.”

She started a small mission at her church, Sacred Heart, and asked for donations of infant to 2-year-old children’s clothes and supplies. Donations flooded in.

Her next question was, “How do we find moms to get the supplies to?” ...
