Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“As you age, it's ridiculous how fast bird-watching creeps up on you (Bird-watching, April 22, 2025). You spend your whole life being pretty indifferent to birds... and then one day you're like: ‘Damn, if I'm not mistaken, that's a yellow-rumped warbler.’ ” - Brenda

You saw a yellow-rumped warbler up close? Wow. You must be using this. - Shane

“Here's a solid hose recommendation to hopefully ease the same frustrations I always had (Hose headaches, May 14, 2025). We swear by this hose. It doesn’t kink, it hasn’t lost its shape after years of use, it’s lightweight, it’s easy to store since it doesn’t take up much space, the list goes on. This hose is totally different than the one you called out that your mom had years ago based on what it’s made of now. Our neighbors, my parents, they all love it, too. I no longer hate watering flowers every day or use a watering can to avoid dragging the hose around. That’s how easy it makes it. Give 100 feet a try, and I can guarantee you’ll be going back for more. Happy watering season!” - Dani

Take off, hoser! OK, you are too young to remember Bob and Doug McKenzie. Check it out anyway and appreciate your dad’s humor. And thanks for the hose tip. I will seek it out. - Shane

“Thanks for the note at the beginning of yesterday's unavoidable delay for us who need the DU fix first thing in the morning (The old tree, May 19, 2025). Restless minds were quelled. Your observations of Laurel and Hardy were on target (Another nice mess, May 20, 2025). They represented a legacy of great comedy without the gags, innuendo, crudeness, etc. that has become prevalent today. I'm sure that one of my comic idols, Red Skelton, must have surely gained some insight into his artform from them. Red was an amazing role model for clean humor, a deep sense of gratitude and patriotism. The recording of his explanation of the Pledge of Allegiance is powerful, soul-stirring and inclusive: https://youtu.be/lYSw297IgBY. Thanks for your weekly oasis from the quagmire of noise out there.” - John

I had not seen Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance piece. Powerful, indeed. - Shane

“I could relate to your column (Then, Guthrie County Times Vedette, May 20, 2025). I used to love that song until I was married and had kids. And, like you said, it seems like we always found excuses not to do things with our parents or do more things with our kids. I guess that’s why you become a grandparent, to make up for times that you didn’t get to do those things with your own kids. Enjoy life while you have them. They are gone way too soon.” - Kris

He walked away, but his smile never did…” - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

BUSINESS FEATURE
Rethinking the trades

By Gunner Onkst

“Until the (AI) robots are created that can physically install servers and fiber optics, there’s always going to be work in the maintenance of a data center,” Jay Nickelson said.

Trade schools — now categorized as Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE) — encompass more than electrical, plumbing or welding. Although these trades are still popular, community colleges including Des Moines Area Community College are offering CTE programs like health administration and telecommunications that are of interest to incoming students. According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, the number of students enrolling in vocational-focused community colleges increased 16% from 2022 to 2023. Given the rising interest, enrollment in these programs is expected to continue to grow.  ...

Pampered pets
Residents share how they go the extra mile to spoil their pets.

By Becky Kolosik

Many pet owners view their animal companions as part of the family — deserving of the best care, lots of attention, and at least a few perks. Besides the usual walks, pet beds and toys, some of these pampered pets get extra special treatment: pup cups from drive-throughs, birthday parties, paw soaks and a special place in those important days of their owners’ lives — as well as in their hearts.

The perfect pair
Haleigh Meier has had many pets leave “pawprints” on her heart. First came Ginger, then Jazzie and, finally, Maggie, who she lost at the end of 2019. After Maggie, she wasn’t sure she would ever be ready for another dog.
