Good morning to you!

How many breadboards does a family need? The answer is more than one, apparently.

In my childhood home, we had one breadboard, and I vividly remember it. Not because we cut a lot of bread or other things on it — although, we did — but because it was a familiar object on birthdays, used playfully on our rear ends for “birthday spankings.”

Now, before you think my parents were abusive, you should know that this spanking tradition was all in good fun, and no pain was involved. At least I thought so, until the breadboard broke in half on my brother’s bottom. No worries, though. Dad glued it back together, and it functioned properly for many more years.

That breadboard showed decades of use, worn thin in the center — and not from spankings. Dad’s use of a finely sharpened bread knife took its toll on the wooden board over the years.

When Jolene and I were first married, she wasn’t a fan of wooden breadboards. They seemed like a bullpen for bacteria, she rationalized. So, we had a few plastic boards that were frequently used and frequently scrubbed. Over time, though, they looked like something a puppy chewed on.

Our daughter Samantha then gave us an 8-inch by 12-inch slate board that seems sanitary but makes an awful screeching noise when a knife goes across it.

My friend Ian recognized this dilemma and explained the benefits of using a wooden breadboard to Jolene. Then he made us one as a gift. Soon after, the plastic breadboards found their way to the garbage can. And then, like rabbits, the wooden breadboards started multiplying.

We now have an upright holder on our kitchen counter that holds three breadboards of various sizes. Much like the three bears, we have a large board, a small board and one that’s just right. In addition, we have one the size of my billfold that I am still trying to determine a logical use for. And the slate one. And the one from Ian.

If you are counting, that means we have more breadboards than I can count on one hand — and none have a handle, which makes them useless for birthday spankings.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brook Rollins has been demonstrating a bad habit of not answering questions. She consistently refuses, switching to shibboleths and off-subject political platitudes. Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo gave her three chances recently to answer a single question about whether India and South Korea are open to allowing more U.S. agricultural products in. Rollins humiliated herself trying to not answer. That is very different from most all other trade negotiators in the current administration.

We think it means she is not empowered in trade negotiations and doesn’t know anything. If so, that disenfranchises farmers and ranchers and suggests maybe the D of A is headed for the chopping block. With more than 100,000 employees, the D of A has one bureaucrat for every 26 people engaged in agriculture in America, in any manner.

Meet Nathan Horgen
Horgen teaches with heart.

By Lindsey Giardino

Why does Nathan Horgen enjoy teaching?

“I think, for many teachers, this question shifts over time from, ‘Why did you want to become a teacher?’ to ‘Why do you continue to return to the profession?’ ” he says. “The answer for me is consistent in that it’s exciting to be part of young people’s lives as they learn and grow.”

Horgen says it’s a great feeling to work in a profession with a community of people who are committed to supporting kids through all their successes, challenges, mistakes and talents.

“It would be difficult to find an occupation more genuine than that,” he says.
