A noontime Daily Umbrella!

Publisher's note: Due to some unforeseen problems our email platform provider encountered, The Daily Umbrella is being delivered several hours late. My apologies to our early-risers.

I had an old tree in my yard cut down recently. At least I think it was mine. I commented to my neighbor, Ron, about the tree once, noting, “I think your tree is starting to die.” Ron replied, “I hate to break it to you, but that's your tree.” He was right.

This was not a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. It was a 50-foot evergreen that was 50-plus years old — and it was only feet away from my neighbor’s house and my new concrete driveway. I have a chainsaw, and I really like to use it, but this was not a project Ron and I were going to take on ourselves. So, I called in a professional. In a matter of hours, the old tree was safely cut down, the stump was drilled out, and everything was hauled away. It’s a beautiful sight.

Don’t get me wrong, I like trees. This one, though, was nearly half dead and had become an eyesore. It also dripped heavy sap on cars parked beneath it. I, of course, learned not to park there — the hard way. Others did not and surely cussed me when they had to scrape that sap off.

Through this process, I could not help but think of the symbolism of the old tree. I assume someone planted it with great expectations. Watering it. Watching it. Waiting patiently. Wondering what it would be like when it grew.

The old tree provided the comforts of shade for multiple residents and was a home for numerous birds and squirrels. And it grew. Oh, my, how it grew.

Ater a few decades, though, the old tree started to show its age. The bright green needles turned brown, and the branches drooped. It competed in a losing battle for space with the neighboring trees. And its tired roots were pushing up through the bare dirt.

The old tree had seen better days, but it was still hanging on. Then, a couple of guys who were enjoying a cocktail decided the old tree had become a nuisance. So, it was dropped to the ground and removed. The birds and squirrels scampered around dazed and confused in the aftermath, but only for a few days.

In time, new grass will hopefully grow in the dirt where the old tree once majestically stood. The birds and squirrels will certainly find new homes. In just a few years, seemingly no one will remember the old tree. It might be pointed at in a few old pictures, but that’s it. Forgotten.

Ron and I will have a toast to the old tree and send it off properly — and then we will plant grass seed and cuss the tree’s leftover acidity that won’t let the grass take hold. That will surely be a message from the old tree saying it doesn’t want us to forget about it quite yet. And, for a short time, we won’t.

Have a memorable Monday, and thanks for reading.

Blue Agave’s space has three different signs. One still reads Little Brother, another bears the logo of Blue Agave, and the third, the one that is actually operational, reads “space available.” Blue Shark has been replaced by Perfect 10 after only six months in a location that has seen Teddy Maroon’s, Whiskey River and Gusto Pizza Bar also come and go quickly.

Juniper Moon owner Tony Lemmo says that bar will close the end of the month. Nothing is official, but the smart guys are betting it will be leased by a couple of bankers who want to put Iowa’s first all-women’s sports bar in the space. For now, Juniper Moon is going out with a some special cross promotions: The Hidden Eggroll will be there Thursday, signature burgers from Top Bun food truck will be there Saturday, and Lemmo himself will be resurrecting Hotshots for some kielbasas on Friday of this week.

PEOPLE & PETS
Pupcycled volunteers make dog toys from donated fabric scraps

By Jackie Wilson

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is a common quote — and one that Jan Marks says applies to discarded clothing that can help dogs in need.

Marks, of Windsor Heights, is currently the Iowa lead for the nonprofit Pupcycled, which was started in California by two high school girls. The girls make dog toys from donated fabric scraps. They collect donated used clothing and sew dog toys together. Once completed, they give the toys to no-kill animal shelters and other rescue organizations.

Marks became interested while living in California. She was on an email list, where she read about rescue pets needing dog toys. She contacted Pupcycled to bring the program to Iowa.   ...
