Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I did not need to wear glasses till my mid-40s (Eyeglasses, May 5, 2025). Now, every nook and cranny where I sit, read, dine, sleep or drive has glasses. I have had cataract surgery on both eyes but had it done before it become a serious matter. One old buddy shared he finally had his cataracts removed when he told the eye doctor he seemed to be reading through chicken noodle soup. As far as the glasses, I would be considered Ecumenical as I have all colors, shapes and sizes. God bless the cheaters.” - Rex

Chicken soup? Yes, that would be a problem. - Shane

“I totally agree (The ice cube tray dilemma, May 6, 2025). I also love ice, then I had my blood checked, and my body was low in iron and one of the outward signs could be craving ice. So, after two iron infusions and taking an iron pill every other day, I no longer crave ice but still enjoy a casual chew. I have found the best ice is the ‘soft’ ice that most Casey’s stores have. On a long trip, I will fill a cup with this ice and eat it to stay awake.” - Janet

I prefer Skittles on long road trips. - Shane

“You always seemed like a half-full kind of guy vs. a half-empty, huh (The ice cube tray dilemma, May 6, 2025)?” - Jimmy

How about overflowing? - Shane

“Years ago I was hooked on ice chewing until I heard a radio doctor say that I was low in iron (The ice cube tray dilemma, May 6, 2025). I started taking an over-the-counter iron pill, and that kicked my habit.” - Thea

A cracked tooth might help kick my habit, too. - Shane

“Ice for your SODA (The ice cube tray dilemma, May 6, 2025)? When my girls entered school and would have friends over, I switched from SODA to POP. I didn't want to embarrass them by saying soda. Now that they're grown and have their own families, I can return to soda.” - John

My Texas friends call every soda a Coke, which has an entirely different meaning for some folks. - Shane

“Your bar soap is actually plant oil blend (coconut, palm, olive) and lye (Wash your hands, May 7, 2025).” - Abby (your daughter who buys the soap)

What, no sunflower seed oil? - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Medicine is the softest of all sciences and nutrition is the melted margarine of medical science - case 101.

Breakfast conundrums are the current battleground for nutrition's zealots, mainly because so many people are skipping it now. Nearly a quarter of people between 20 and 39 skip breakfast, while overall 15% of U.S. adults do, according to federal data. Mostly they do this in hopes of losing weight. The Sunni wing of nutritional dogma preaches that breakfast is overloaded with calories and should be taboo. It is overloaded, if by breakfast you mean sugary pastries. But plain yogurt with berries is not. Surprisingly, or not, some of the federal studies casting doubt on breakfast’s weight-loss benefits didn’t take details like that into account according to Wall Street Journal. The Shiite wing insists that a healthy breakfast discourages late night binge eating and should be encouraged to help lose weight. Their imans add that breakfast contributes about 21% of a U.S. adult’s daily calories, but provides 42% of vitamin D and 30% of vitamin A, iron and folate, according to a committee of scientists advising the U.S. government on its next round of dietary guidelines — the much discredited food pyramid. Buddha, no zealot, had this nutritional advice: "All things in moderation, nothing in excess." In your face zealots.

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Well, that was something

By Joe Weeg

“Well, that was something,” she said out of the blue on a Tuesday. A phrase she was fond of saying for nearly any event from the grand to the not-so-grand. Two days later, she died. My mom was nearly 98 years old.

You wouldn’t have known her, of course. My mom was a housewife most of her life. No awards. No claims to fame. No streets named in her honor. She was born, she lived, she died. In the in-betweens, she raised eight kids, buried a husband before he turned 50, cared for sick friends and a sick daughter for years, and cooked more than her fair share of pies, cinnamon rolls, pastries and thousands upon thousands of meals. The idea that food could be a love language was unimaginable for a child of the Depression. Food was survival.

But food was her love language. Which was a boon for this pastry lover. ...

Pampered pets
Residents share how they go the extra mile to spoil their pets

By Rachel Harrington

Many pet owners view their animal companions as part of the family — deserving of the best care, lots of attention, and at least a few perks. Besides the usual walks, pet beds and toys, some of these pampered pets get extra special treatment: pup cups from drive-throughs, birthday parties, paw soaks and a special place in those important days of their owners’ lives — as well as in their hearts.

On the go
Josh and Jen Dieter have spent more than 30 years as pet owners. In the fall of 2023, the couple lost their 13-year-old dog, Maple.
“I made it about three days before I began looking for another,” Joshua says. “I started looking online, and we found out that both Jen and I were looking at the same website, and from the 100 dogs on the site, seven out of 10 that we each looked at were the same ones.”
