Good morning to you!

Ask most any person what the mascot is at their high school, and they would surely and immediately provide you with the correct answer. It is a matter of school pride for most of us. Those who attended college would be able to rattle off the mascot answer, too, and for the same reason.

Meanwhile, do you ever wonder where these mascot names came from? Or why the powers that be chose them? I decided to review the mascot names of the 367 Iowa schools listed with the Iowa High School Athletic Association, and I was surprised at what I learned.

Nearly 21% of Iowa’s schools have one of five mascots, with the most popular choice being Warriors. Yes, Warriors. Eighteen schools have this mascot, to be exact, and they are schools of all sizes. Waukee to Whiting. Cedar Rapids Washington to Central Elkader. Norwalk to North Union. Warriors are known for fighting, so I guess this makes sense. For the record, no Iowa schools have mascots called the Forfeitures or the Negotiators.

Second on the list are the Tigers at 17. Grinnell. Griswold. South Hardin. Spencer. Tipton. Trinity Christian. Most of us have never seen a tiger in the wild, but our visions of them include power and might, and these animals evoke fear in the minds of most. Seems like a good mascot name. It’s a much better choice than the Sloths, at least.

Then comes a tie for third with three mascots. One is the Wildcats with 14. Hamburg and Humboldt chose it. So did Carlisle, Central City, West Lyon and Woodbury Central, to name some. Wildcats are ferocious and fast. The Kittens? Not so much.

The Eagles also tied at No. 3 with 14 schools. And not Don Henley and Glenn Frey. These Eagles seek to soar to the top, much like the Philadelphia Eagles did this year in the Super Bowl. The schools are mostly smaller in size. Eagle Grove, of course. Also East Union. Midland. Moulton-Udell. Saydel. Siouxland Christian. No Canaries.

And rounding out the top five in the third-place tie are the Bulldogs. Schools include Bedford, Bettendorf, Lake Mills, LeMars, Ogden and, of course, the Bulldogs from my hometown of Algona. Actual Bulldogs are often overweight, clumsy and drool a lot. They are not exactly an intimidating mascot, but they are a better choice than the Hamsters, which no Iowa schools have picked yet.

One has to admire most of the schools with mascots unique to them, and there are more than you might expect. Beavers. Bison. Bloodhounds. Bolts. Bombers. Chickasaws. Dodgers. Dons. Dragons. Gaels. Generals. Green Devils. Lancers. Lightning. Midgets. Mohawks. Monarchs. Muskies. Norsemen. Orabs. Plainsmen. Polar Bears. Railsplitters. Raptors. Roadrunners. Roughriders. Sailors. Savages. Scarlets. Stormin’ Pointers. Toreadors. Trailblazers. Westerners. And Wheelers, to name a few.

So, the next time you are in one of those awkward, ice-breaking situations and you ask where someone is from, follow it up by inquiring about their school mascot. Better yet, rattle it off for them. You will be in for a great conversation.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has promised to deliver a major report this week on America's health crisis. The food available for us to eat is definitely going to be different soon. Here are some clues about what to expect that we have gleaned from quotes of HHS leaders:

"The U.S. consumes 70% of the world’s pharmaceuticals and has just 4.2% of the world’s population... Pharmaceutical companies are allowed to advertise products in the U.S. This is forbidden in Europe. They get a tax deduction to advertise products that people can’t afford but the government pays for." - HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Junior (RFK)

"70% of the money the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) spends is on chronic illnesses and we aren’t getting our money’s worth." - CMS Director Dr. Marty Makary

"Since 2012 we have seen no increase in life expectancy in America." - Dr. Jay Battacharya, National Institute of Health Director

"129 million Americans have a chronic disease. Five of 10 deaths in the U.S. are strongly associated with major chronic diseases." - Dr. Mehmet Oz, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director

"When my uncle was President, the chronic disease rate in America was 3%. Now it’s around 60%. Childhood diabetes was practically unknown then; now 38% of American teens are diabetic or pre diabetic. In 1970 one in 10,000 had autism; now it’s one in 31. In California, it's one in every 20, one in every 10.5 boys." - RFK

"During Covid, we were told to 'Trust the experts.' 'Trust the experts' is not a function of science or democracy. It is a function of totalitarianism and religion." - RFK

"The food pyramid is one of the most flawed pieces of misinformation in the history of medicine." - Makary

Pampered pets
Residents share how they go the extra mile to spoil their critters

By Ashley Rullestad

Many pet owners view their animal companions as part of the family — deserving of the best care, lots of attention, and at least a few perks. Besides the usual walks, pet beds and toys, some of these pampered pets get extra special treatment: pup cups from drive-throughs, birthday parties, paw soaks and a special place in those important days of their owners’ lives — as well as in their hearts.

Alan Kinsey isn’t a stranger to dogs or Johnston. He grew up in town, attended Johnston schools and his family are some of the town’s original settlers. After moving away for 50 years, Kinsey decided to move back home, and he was looking for a canine companion to join him.
