Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Good morning, Shane. My mother could make a high-low, two-note whistle that carried across our neighborhood backyards (The supper bell, April 30, 2025). My wife and I were unable to duplicate that, so we had a bell mounted outside our sliding door. Our girls were usually in sound range of the bell but, due to sight obstructions, not visible. I suppose a mother would now have to text. Thanks for thoughtful reading.” - John

Whistling is a lost art, too. Maybe that’s a good thing. - Shane

“The bell rang for dinner (The supper bell, April 30, 2025). The front porch light went on to say, ‘Get your rear end home.’ ” - Brad

And that light better not have to start flashing, or you knew you were in trouble. - Shane

“Thanks, Shane, for the trip down memory lane, as I had not thought about this in many years (The supper bell, April 30, 2025). Having grown up on Main Street (the only street) of a small town in Upstate New York, we had three houses in a row to call kids back in for dinner. Our neighbors used a silver bell like you spoke of in your article. To differentiate whose dinner was ready, our house used a whistle that would sound with three long blasts. Our neighbor on the other side used a large steel triangle chime with a striker. Each sound was distinct and effective at getting the right kids back home at the right time.” - Loren

What if they all chimed or whistled at once? - Shane

“My mom didn't use a bell to call us home, just a very powerful whistle, not to be ignored (The supper bell, April 30, 2025).” - Janet

I will bet that whistle got the attention of every neighborhood dog, too. - Shane

“Good afternoon, Shane. I can't tell you how many pairs of glasses I've had, but at 74, it must be in the dozens (Eyeglass count, May 5, 2025). An important point about your used glasses is that when you're done with them, keeping the most recent pair for an emergency, you should take the used ones to Walmart or to a Lions Club to donate. Besides testing young children for potential eye issues, the Lions collect the used glasses, and they are sent all over the world to be prescribed to those who need them.” - John

I should have included the Lions Club collection effort. Thank you for passing that along, John. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

BELLY UP TO...
Smoking Goat Pub

By Jackie Wilson

“GOAT” doesn’t just refer to a hay-eating, climbing, hooved domestic animal. It is also an acronym — Greatest Of All Time — often referring to sports icons. Yet there is another GOAT in town. This one refers to a bar, The Smoking Goat Pub.

Located at 3015 Merle Hay Road, the place opened in June 2023 in a building that has housed several bars over the past four decades. Owners cleaned up and renovated the former Wisco Pub, including the front bar area that now features brick with a calming video screenscape of a fireplace.

Pampered pets
Residents share how they go the extra mile to spoil their critters

By Rachel Harrington

Many pet owners view their animal companions as part of the family — deserving of the best care, lots of attention, and at least a few perks. Besides the usual walks, pet beds and toys, some of these pampered pets get extra special treatment: pup cups from drive-throughs, birthday parties, paw soaks and a special place in those important days of their owners’ lives — as well as in their hearts.

Some special life events are made even more so when your favorite people — or pets — are part of the experiences. Aryn Book and Daniel Hilsabeck have shared many such memorable moments with their pups.

“Daniel had always had a Yorkie (Zipper) growing up,” Aryn recalls. “We got Benny, a Yorkie, about seven years ago, a few years after Zipper passed away. I had a chihuahua growing up and always liked the idea of two dogs, so we got another Yorkie, Sammy, who is 4 months old.”
