Good morning to you!

I have worn glasses since I was a sophomore in high school, and I should have had them earlier. I didn’t know I needed them until I put on a friend’s pair and realized how much better I could see. The definition in the horizon. The details in a clock face. And the crispness of words and letters on signs. I didn’t know what I was missing. Until I did.

If you have never needed glasses, count yourself lucky. And even though most of us with glasses didn’t want to wear glasses, few of us could deny the great benefit in seeing better.

Those first glasses were more than 40 years ago, and they screamed 1980s. Large lenses. Minimal frame. Kind of thick.

A few years later, I opted for contacts, mostly because I couldn’t read the scoreboard during my wrestling matches. I learned that wrestling with contacts wasn’t easy either. So, I kept the original glasses, until they blew off my face while in a farm field during a nasty windstorm. Never found them.

I was trying to add up how many pairs of glasses I have purchased since then. I thought it would be an easy count, much like cars I have owned. It’s not. I had to rely mostly on family photos for memories. I counted seven pairs, and most of those have been in the last two decades as my prescription changed frequently.

There was a time, though, when I thought I was done with glasses. About 20 years ago, I decided to ante up and have laser surgery on my eyes. It worked, as I had nearly perfect vision… for a while. The surgeon explained that my vision would continue to deteriorate, just as it had been doing. And it did. Within a few years, I needed “driving glasses." Within a few more years, I needed “reading glasses.” And I also had to get prescription sunglasses. For a guy with his eyes repaired who thought he would be done with eye wear, I have now compiled a lot of glasses, especially when you add up all the “cheater” glasses I seem to have in most every room.

The odd part, at least in my mind, is that I don’t need to wear glasses for the “in-between” stuff. In fact, it bothers me to wear them while sitting with small groups of people, working on my computer or scrolling on my phone. Meanwhile, I can’t imagine living with impaired vision and not having an eye wear solution. And, who knows, I may stroll through a farm field and recover that first wind-blown pair from the 1980s.

How about you? How many pairs of glasses have you had — or still have? Send me a note and let me know.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
Over the past decade, Roundup brought Bayer 67,000 pending legal cases alleging it caused plaintiffs’ cancer. Bayer so far has set aside $16 billion for settlements. Bayer has had problems securing regulatory approval for a different herbicide, dicamba, which is effective at killing glyphosate-resistant weeds. Bayer separately petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court in March seeking to limit legal claims against Roundup. The company argues that consumers shouldn’t be able to sue it under state law for failing to warn about potential cancer risks because the EPA has determined glyphosate doesn’t require a cancer warning. This begs questions, such as: What if Bayer ended Roundup? With all the liability, would anyone else want it? If dicamba is approved, would Round-up end anyhow, or just change its recipe? Are weeds smarter than chemists?

Rethinking the trades

By Gunner Onkst

Trade schools — now categorized as Career and Technical Education Programs (CTE) — encompass more than electrical, plumbing or welding. Although these trades are still popular, community colleges including Des Moines Area Community College are offering CTE programs like health administration and telecommunications that are of interest to incoming students. According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, the number of students enrolling in vocational-focused community colleges increased 16% from 2022 to 2023. Given the rising interest, enrollment in these programs is expected to continue to grow.

Driven to serve
Haines’ mission to help others was inspired by his mom.

By Lindsey Giardino

Wayne Haines volunteers for two reasons. First, he was inspired by his mom, who spent her whole life helping others.

“I got her genes, I guess,” he jokes.
The Dallas Center resident also believes God put people in the world to help others.
“It’s a crazy enough place going on these days, and a lot of people need help,” Haines says. “It helps me and them feel good as well.”
