Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Squeaky floors (The weathered look, April 15, 2025)? All this time, I thought it was my shoes.” - Tom

It could be those refrigerated cheese curds. - Shane

“I understand the craze over the vintage stuff, including clothes, but I don’t think I will ever understand why anyone would buy — or wear — new clothes with holes in them. What’s up with that? (The weathered look, April 15, 2025)? - Debra

People used to have holes in their clothes because they wore the threads thin by working in them. Now, people buy clothes with holes in them. There is a message in there somewhere. - Shane

“Thank you for your meaning of Easter comments and the history on Easter eggs (Easter, April 16, 2025). He is risen!” - Betty

There is a reason for the season, and not just at Christmas time. - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. My car radio does not have presets (What your radio presents say about you, April 21, 2025). Instead, we can either tune it manually or by artificial intelligence request the radio to tune to a specific channel, such as the streaming service or some of our local AM and FM stations. We tend to listen to the streaming services for the most part as we travel around watching the other people on the highway travel from one office to the other (Mileage, April 8, 2025).” - John

I like how you bring it all together, John. - Shane

“Streaming radio presets (What your radio presents say about you, April 21, 2025)? I am still trying to figure out my 8-track player. And don’t even bring up the VCR.” - Andy

There’s nothing like a song being interrupted while the player changes tracks. And just how many years are you going to let that VCR flash 12:00? - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Nestlé recalled several of its frozen meals after customers complained about finding “wood-like material.” The products the company pulled were Lean Cuisine Butternut Squash Ravioli, Spinach Artichoke Ravioli and Lemon Garlic Shrimp Stir Fry, as well as Stouffer’s brand Party Size Chicken Lasagna. The company said there had been “one potential choking incident to date.” (WSJ)

Caitlin Clark is as significant of a role model as anyone for young girls. She recently endorsed an exclusive Gatorade drink that includes blue1 dye, which will likely be banned by the end of the year, as it has already been in Europe. Blue 1 can cause hypersensitivity reactions. Blue food dyes can be made with cabbage, blueberries and several other natural things. This leaves Caitlin exposed to claims that she has sold out to the junk food oligarchy. She needs to ask Gatorade to remove all synthetic dyes from their foods. Afterall, the government will likely do so anyhow. What is she waiting for? It's not a good look at all. Don't give us a reason to quit loving you.

FILM REVIEW
Th-th… that’s (not) all, folks!

By David Rowley

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie”
PG | 91 minutes
Director: Peter Browngardt
Writers: Darrick Bachman, Peter Browngardt, Kevin Costello
Stars: Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, Peter MacNicol

The Warner Bros.-owned franchise began as a series of animated shorts that were released during the golden age of American animation between 1930 to 1969, and more than 1,000 episodes were released under Looney Tunes and spin-off banner Merrie Melodies.

Although no one director, writer or artist is ultimately responsible for the brilliant heights that Looney Tunes ultimately reached, key contributors obviously include Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng (this critic’s favorite cartoonists) and a stable of unsung gag writers and animators. (Obviously, Mel Blanc is included, but we will get to him later.)

Homes away from home
Local families share experiences hosting foreign exchange students.

By Jackie Wilson

The decision to host a foreign exchange student can come with a myriad of worries. Will the student want to eat the food we make? Will everyone get along? How will we keep the student entertained? Will he or she get homesick? However, many of those who decide to give it a try find their fears to be unfounded as they gain an appreciation of the student’s homeland and culture, see their own country from a new perspective and build bonds that endure. Local residents share their stories about the adventure of being a host family.

German student
The Khoo family of West Des Moines hosted 15-year-old Merle from Wetter, Germany, in 2024.

Merle (pronounced Merla) came through the German exchange program for a two-week experience. Alli Khoo, 14, is a student at Waukee Timberline who is now in her fourth year of taking German language classes. The exchange is part of a program with Waukee Northwest High School.

Alli says she had the option to study either German or Spanish and wanted to learn more about the German culture. Alli’s mom, Kristin Khoo adds, “My grandma immigrated from Germany.”  ...
