Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Shane, I consider myself about 50% Norwegian, and I definitely have a distinct bump on the back of my head (Foreign exchange, April 7, 2025). I cautiously maneuver a double-edge razor around it three times a week along with the rest of my enormous head. Some call it the occipital prominence or protuberance. However, I assure you I have never collided with a toilet seat, whether thirsty or just clumsy.” - Todd

About 50%? That sounds like a weather forecast. - Shane

“You are still a stupid American (Foreign exchange, April 7, 2025).” - Jone

Well, look who woke up! Did the swelling go down yet? - Shane

“I have yet to meet anyone who reads the ‘Judge Parker’ cartoon. It’s not funny, and it’s not entertaining. (Sunday comics, April 9, 2025).” - Darlene

It’s the same people who read “Doonesbury.” - Shane

“Good morning, Shane. David Hookstead wrote a piece in the Outkick section of the FOX NEWS web page. It finds humor in the mistaken arrest of a man for OWI when he was not intoxicated. The article chastised the officers, finds humor in their actions, and requires police to do better. My response to Mr. Hookstead says it all: ‘I concur that officers should do their best. Likewise journalists and their editors should try and do their very best, especially with the pertinent facts. … It's Newton, not Newtown.’ I worked with Officer Winters' father. He was an Knoxville, Iowa, officer and I a Marion County Deputy. Excuse me while I read the Daily Umbrella where I always find perfection.” - John

I appreciate your confidence in us, John. And although we are far from perfect, we do know the difference between Algona and Altoona. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Press conference cyclone (for highly processed junk foods) from U.S. Health and Human Services. These are highlights from Robert Kennedy Jr., HHS director, on Tuesday explaining why bans on petroleum-based food dyes are only a beginning to cleaning up the crap we feed our kids.
~ "When my uncle was president, 3% of American children had chronic diseases — things like ADHD, ADD, ticks, infertility, Tourettes, narcolepsy, Lupus, Crohns, food allergies, asthma. Now it's around 60%"
~ "No money was spent treating chronic childhood diseases when my uncle was president; now it’s about $1 trillion a year. We are spending more money treating these diseases than we spend on our military. This is not sustainable."
~ "If food and drug people want to eat petroleum, let them eat it at home, not put it in our children’s food."
~ "ADHD is treated with medicines... Part of the etiology of these diseases is a kind of malpractice — a mass psychosis that has our media not talking about this. And one of the possible reasons for that is the amount of money coming from the pharmaceutical companies and the food companies.”

~ This is unfortunate news for Iowa's favorite athlete and the state's biggest company. Caitlin Clark recently endorsed Hy-Vee’s exclusive new Cool Blue Gatorade drink. Unfortunately, the blue part of the drink comes from blue dye No. 1, which is on the FDA's hit list. That leaves the impression that CC and Hy-Vee are peddling something Kennedy thinks is destroying the health of our kids."

Homes away from home
Local families share experiences hosting foreign exchange students.

By Becky Kolosik

The decision to host a foreign exchange student can come with a myriad of worries. Will the student want to eat the food we make? Will everyone get along? How will we keep the student entertained? Will he or she get homesick? However, many of those who decide to give it a try find their fears to be unfounded as they gain an appreciation of the student’s homeland and culture, see their own country from a new perspective and build bonds that endure. Local residents share their stories about the adventure of being a host family.

A year of self-discovery and growth
As Norah Leuwerke started her senior year at Indianola High School, she wasn’t sure what her future would look like.

“I was a year younger than everyone in my class, and I didn’t feel ready for college,” she explains. “To be honest, college applications were stressing me out. All I wanted to do was go somewhere I could speak French all the time.”
