Good morning to you!

A minor eye infection. That is what I was diagnosed with after two trips to medical doctors and another to my optometrist.

The first doctor I saw was at a walk-in clinic, and she seemed concerned and prescribed medicated eye drops. She said if they didn’t work to come back immediately. I was seeing my family doctor for another ordeal and told him about the eye thing, too. He said the same but noted that he would send me to an eye doctor if it didn't clear up. It didn’t, so I went to my eye doctor on my own, and he said it was a minor infection and prescribed stronger eye drops. Hours of my time and hundreds of dollars later, and I finally know — I have a minor eye infection.

I get it. You have been there. Most all of us have. And I sometimes wonder if all these trips to the doctor’s office are necessary. I have a feeling many doctors feel the same way. But, as the old adage says, better safe than sorry.

What really hit home with me as I waited in the pharmacy for 30 minutes on my second trip to pick up my eye drops was the number of prescriptions being funneled through that place. I was astonished. Admittedly, I am not a big pill taker. I hold onto to the theory that if I take an aspirin, my headache will go away. And if I don’t take an aspirin, my headache will go away. Apparently, I am one of the few.

According to a CDC report from 2017-2020 (and if it is from the CDC, it must be accurate), the percent of Americans using at least one prescription drug in the past 30 days is 49.9%. The percent of Americans using three or more prescription drugs in the past 30 days is 24.7%. And the percent of Americans using five or more prescription drugs in the past 30 days is 13.5%. And that was before COVID!

That’s a lot of pills. In fact, according to the same report, more than 1 billion drugs are provided or prescribed annually, and 71.9% of visits to physicians result in some form of drug therapy.

With all these prescribed pills, are we living longer? Yes. Are we healthier? No. Feeling better? Maybe.

None of this is a knock on physicians or pharmacists. We need them, and by the looks of things, we need more of them. Rather, it is an observation that we too often look for a pill to fix many of our problems that, in many cases, would go away on their own by taking care of ourselves in better ways — including a minor eye infection.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Baseball attendance at the major league level has been down annually since 2007. Wall Street Journal reports that too many fans have been, or felt they have been, priced out by price gouging concession prices. MLB has finally taken notice. "After years in which concession prices rose to eye-popping levels in some instances — think $8 franks and $15 beers — more teams are offering wallet-friendly options in line with what you’ll see outside of ballparks."

WSJ suggested ballpark prices are echoing the value-priced approach that fast-food restaurants have taken, such as the McDonald’s Value menu. The Baltimore Orioles’ new value menu features 11 items priced at $5 or under, including an all-beef hot dog ($4), popcorn ($3.50), peanuts ($2.50) and a 12-ounce beer ($5). The Milwaukee Brewers’ value menu features four items for $4 each, including a junior-sized hot dog and junior-sized nachos.

The Iowa Cubs have Thursday deals on beer, with first beers free for Mug Club members. They also offer $1 hot dogs on Dog Day games.

Meet Cindy Bernhard
Enjoys the variety that comes with teaching

By Lindsey Giardino

This school year marks Cindy Bernhard’s 24th year of teaching fourth grade at Lawson Elementary. In May, she will officially have 36 years of teaching under her belt, including nine years in Algona and three years at North Kossuth.

Bernhard’s inspiration for becoming a teacher stemmed from her role as a big sister to four younger siblings.

“They could probably tell you that I used to make them sit at our dining room table and would ‘teach’ them, making up lessons,” she shares. “Ultimately, a teacher in high school encouraged me to go into teaching. It seemed like the perfect profession since I enjoyed babysitting my cousins and neighbors and also managing or bossing around my younger siblings.” ...
