Good morning to you!

The radio presets in your vehicle may say more about you than you realize — and certainly more than most of us want to admit.

I don’t listen to local radio as often in my vehicle as I used to, as I have opted for streaming radio services, which I truly enjoy. Even so, the presets on my standard radio are still saved — and in a very particular way.

Like most of you reading this right now, I assumed everyone created radio presets just like me — in numerical order, starting on the left. First, 92.5. Then 93.3. Then 94.9. Then 98.9. I can’t recall beyond that, other than public radio and WHO on AM stations, but you get the idea. At some point, I learned I could save a second set of presets on the same numbers. Does anyone really listen to that many local radio stations? Clearly, they have a wider range of listening interests than I do, or they at least want others to think they do.

Apparently, a large number of radio listeners set their presets in another way — in favorites order. The most-listened-to station is the first one on the left, then the next favorite and so on. Any numerical pattern is thrown out the car window with this approach. I guess that could work if I actually had a favorite radio station.

A few people I talked with about this simply save their station presets randomly. No rhyme or reason. No order. No logic whatsoever. These are the folks who think planning calendars or any form of lists are for sissies. And they are still working on their taxes after April 15.

And then there are the folks who don’t have any presets, as they most likely don’t know how to set them and don’t have any interest in learning how to do so. These are the “seek” and “scan” folks, or the ones who set their radio to one station and leave it.

Years ago, I knew a used car manager who would always check to see what station was on the dial of the cars he would determine trade-in values for. He said it helped him decide which stations he should advertise the dealership on. Of course, this got my mischievous mind spinning, and I came up with a great practical joke I have used many times since. If you really want to mess with someone, change all the radio presets in their car to one station that you know they won’t like.

Meanwhile, I am sticking with my streaming radio services, which, by the way, are pre-set in numerical order, showing once again that I like how those folks think.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

Back to the Biz
Chrissy Johnson announced she's back in business with Joppa Experience on Sixth Avenue just south of the river. She previously offered fabulous Chicago soul food at the Merle Hay Mall food court.

Checkerboard of Pleasantville announced they will celebrate their 50th anniversary on July 19. That adds up to a zillion tons of legendary, trans fat-free onion rings and mini corn dogs.

Pyra Pizzeria owners Steve and Deb Taylor announced they will close the restaurant after six years in business.

Portillo’s, famous for big hot dogs and Italian beef, is expanding into new cities with much smaller versions of the giant dining rooms and expansive menus it is known for around its home base in Chicago. Hopes are that scaling back will help it grow in others ways while keeping costs in check. Some Portillo’s in the Chicago area are more than double the size of a professional basketball court.  Analysts welcome the loss of space. Dine-in consumers are less common now, making up around 40% of Portillo’s sales compared with over 50% before the pandemic. (WSJ)

Saint Joseph pantry helps meet many needs
Generosity of parishioners leads to ability to serve more people.

By Rich Wicks

A well-known Bible verse (Matthew 17:20) tells how even a small amount of faith can lead to moving mountains. Similarly, a small idea can lead to big things. That’s true of the food pantry at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset.

The church’s food pantry began in the heart and mind of Joan Loftus.

“I started working on it in January of 2021. The thought came to me through prayer. The Lord just put the need on my heart, that there was a need for food assistance,” Loftus says. “It started out small with a China hutch that we started filling with donations from our parishioners.”

As church members donated to help other members, word spread of a greater need. ...

1930: Prisoners left to burn in Ohio fire. A fire at an Ohio prison kills 320 inmates, some of whom burn to death when they are not unlocked from their cells. It is one of the worst prison disasters in American history. The Ohio State Penitentiary was built in Columbus in 1834. Throughout its history, it had a poor reputation. A cholera epidemic swept through the facility in 1849, killing 121 convicts. In 1893, a prison superintendent wrote that "ten thousand pages of history of the Ohio Penitentiary would [not] give one idea of the inward wretchedness of its 1,900 inmates. The unwritten history is known only by God himself."... READ MORE
