Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“Love the recollection of Sunday Funnies (Favorite comic strips, April 9, 2025). I couldn't miss the chance to connect historic Woodland Cemetery in Des Moines as the burial spot of James Baird Weaver, the great-great-grandfather of Hank Ketcham of ‘Dennis the Menace’ fame.” - Mike

And who says Des Moines doesn’t have famous people? - Shane

“I’m with you. Shane. ‘Family Circus’ was always my first view (Favorite comic strips, April 9, 2025). I remember some weeks when the entire comic was just one large picture. I was also partial to ‘Garfield.’ It was probably the thick sarcasm and love for lasagna that drew me in. Thanks for the memories!” – Kris

Well, you can’t go wrong with lasagna. Meanwhile, my favorite ‘Family Circus’ cartoon was one when Billy’s parents had friends over to grill. In front of the couple, Billy asked his dad, “Are these the steak friends or the hamburger friends?” - Shane

“Shane, I so miss ‘The Far Side’ by Gary Larson (Favorite comic strips, April 9, 2025). Funniest, most clever cartoonist ever! Everyone should own his books.” - James

I agree, and I do. Several, in fact. - Shane

“I remember April 10, 1963, very well (This week in history, April 10, 2025). I was serving in the U.S .Coast Guard, and my ship was sent out to help with the search for the USS Thresher when she went down. Our job back then was search and rescue. I enjoy reading the daily newsletter and your column.” - Jim

I appreciate you reading this newsletter, and I appreciate your service to our country much more. Thank you. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

ART NEWS
German domination — this time, it’s all good

By Jim Duncan

The world edged a little closer to discovering what art is, thanks to the German court system. At least, Germany’s Federal Court of Justice determined what art isn’t — that being Birkenstock sandals. The German company that makes those, which goes back to 1774, filed a lawsuit against three competitors who sold sandals that were similar.

Homes away from home
Local families share experiences hosting foreign exchange students.

By Rachel Harrington

The decision to host a foreign exchange student can come with a myriad of worries. Will the student want to eat the food we make? Will everyone get along? How will we keep the student entertained? Will he or she get homesick? However, many of those who decide to give it a try find their fears to be unfounded as they gain an appreciation of the student’s homeland and culture, see their own country from a new perspective and build bonds that endure. Local residents share their stories about the adventure of being a host family.

Carrying on the tradition
Jessica Gibbons-Booton’s first experience with foreign exchange students was her senior year, when her family hosted Olga from Belarus. She says she still keeps in touch with Olga and talks with her regularly. Because she enjoys traveling and learning about new cultures, Jessica, now a mom of two, figured it would be a fun way for her kids to learn about other cultures. ...
