Good morning to you!

Welcome to another edition of the mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“I average 575 miles per week (Mileage, April 8, 2025). Most weeks, my wife goes to Mason City to run her mom around town for stuff — add 150 miles per week for her. So, finally, we're above average in something!” - Brad

You are more like the medium — or maybe the mean. - Shane

Good morning, Shane. My brother lives in Jackson, Wyoming (Mileage, April 8, 2025). It's Key West dressed in fleece. Although they have lots of high-priced shops with high-priced goods, many things more varied and reasonably priced are two, four or more hours away, just like Key West. I must also mention how many times my wife and I, both retired, run errands or have appointments during the day and wonder where all you other people who should be at work are going. Must be a lot of folks who have two or more offices. Thanks for clearing another mystery up.” - John

Key West dressed in fleece? That sounds like my kind of town. - Shane

“Did you not get the daily paper? Comics were in there as well (Favorite comic strips, April 9, 2025). They were black and white, but just as funny. In Seattle, they were in the section with the sports and TV guide the paper provided. I would try to plan my TV-watching, but the paper came to the house before Dad got home and it had to be his choice on TV programs. I learned the difference between news (Walter Cronkite) and gossip (any other news show). Thanks for the memories.” - Donna

I subscribed to the daily paper as an adult for years but was never quite attracted to those comic strips like I was to the Sunday ones as a child. Maybe it was the color. Maybe the extra time. More likely, though, it was having Dad next to me to point out the really funny ones to. - Shane

Have a thoughtful Thursday, and thanks for reading.

Down to the bone. America’s cattle supply is at its lowest level since 1951, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department. That has pushed cattle markets in Chicago to a record high in January, almost 20% higher than they were two years ago. Cattlemen have complained for decades that cheap beef is being dumped on the U.S. mainly by Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. That has made it so difficult for American producers to make profits they have reduced their herds.

Don't let your dogs read this but the latest development in this saga is that U.S. meat companies are embracing “white bone” programs, aiming to pick each bone clean as they move down processing lines. Pricier cattle mean costlier steaks, burger and roasts in the supermarkets, so The Big Beef Boys (Tyson, Cargill, Omaha Beef and JBS) are all-in harvesting every last morsel of salable meat. For a large company, a 1% increase in the amount of meat harvested per carcass could translate to $80 million in annual revenue. That 1% is usually added to burger trim. (WSJ)

CARS IN THE CITY
‘Super Cruise’ on the all-electric Cadillac is amazing

By Jackie Wilson

The Optiq, Cadillac’s newest all-electric vehicle, debuted in 2025. The Optiq Luxury 1 is a smaller SUV than its sibling, the Lyriq.

The Optiq lists at $55,615. If you have a red color obsession, it will cost you a bit more, as the price is an extra $1,225 for a red model. Is that why folks buy gray SUVs, to save a few bucks? Then again, if you can afford to buy a Cadillac, you probably aren’t pinching pennies.  ...

Homes away from home
Local families share experiences hosting foreign exchange students.

By Ashley Rullestad

The decision to host a foreign exchange student can come with a myriad of worries. Will the student want to eat the food we make? Will everyone get along? How will we keep the student entertained? Will he or she get homesick? However, many of those who decide to give it a try find their fears to be unfounded as they gain an appreciation of the student’s homeland and culture, see their own country from a new perspective and build bonds that endure. Local residents share their stories about the adventure of being a host family.

Mexico to Johnston
Nikki and Matt Kauffman met a Mexican family through mutual friends eight years ago. The families kept in touch, and, when the Mexican family’s son, Jenaro, was looking for an alternative placement as an exchange student in the U.S., they contacted the Kauffmans to see if they would be interested in hosting him for the remainder of the school year. Jenaro’s dad had been an exchange student himself in another state, so he was familiar with the process and experience. The Kauffmans decided that the best thing for Jenaro would be to have him finish the school year with them.  ...
