Good morning to you!

Product and food expiration dates drive me batty, and I am convinced they contribute to a great deal of waste as people toss them in fear of getting sick if they use or consume them. My wife and youngest daughter are two of those folks. I tend to trust my olfactory more than a date printed on the side of a package. I also can’t seem to distinguish between “best by,” “use by,” “sell by” or “freeze by” dates.

One interesting fact I recently learned is that infant formula is the only product with a federally mandated “use by” date. So, apparently, I can still drink my expired can of Coke Zero and not instantly die. Whew.

Meanwhile, I wondered if there are some foods that truly never expire or, at least, last a really long time. I wonder no more, as I discovered from multiple sources that baking soda, beans, corn syrup, hard liquor, raw honey, pure maple syrup, non-iodized salt, spices, sugar, vinegar, pure vanilla extract and white rice all fit that bill. Sure, none compare with that leftover lasagna in the refrigerator, but they really do never expire.

Some other products may not “never” expire, but they do last a really long time. Those include frozen almonds, pecans, cashews and macadamia nuts; unopened beef jerky; dill pickles; waffle mix; mustard; and oatmeal. Just don’t combine them.

Of course, a whole slew of canned products have a long shelf-life, too, including artichokes, asparagus, beets, chili, corn, fish, meat, mushrooms, peas, pumpkin, spaghetti, sauerkraut, spinach, sweet potatoes and coconut milk. Mom was on to something.

Don't forget cake mix, bouillon cubes, chicken broth and even dark chocolate.

Dried fruit, dried chiles and dried mushrooms stand the test of time, too, as does instant coffee, tea, cookie dough and grape jelly. Seriously.

“Instant” foods last, too. Instant beans. Instant dip mix. Instant pudding. Instant soup. And those crusty bottles of hot sauce in your refrigerator are apparently fine, too.

The list goes on, and it is a bit overwhelming yet pleasantly assuring at the same time. Bottom line, if the product has dairy, it is better to be safe than sorry. Otherwise, stick to the above foods… or give it a good whiff first.

Now, on to that leftover lasagna.

Back to the Biz
Times are tough for legacy sodas, and they aren’t likely to be helped by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has called them "poison." Energy drinks and niche beverages billed as healthier have been grabbing market share for years. How tough is it? U.S. sales volume of Coca-Cola branded sodas slid 14% between 2010 and 2023, according to industry tracker Beverage Digest. But Pepsi’s volume, including Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Zero Sugar, plummeted 32%.

Don’t sell the pop, sell the vibe. Gen Z keeps surprising everybody. Having shaken up politics with unpredicted voting choices, and the restaurant world by voting to not go out as often as older generations, now it seems they are not fond of the "name brands" that have dominated super market shelves for a century. That’s why PepsiCo and other big food oligarchies are buying up smaller brands. PepsiCo bought Poppi last month for $1.98 billion. That sounds like far too much for a company that barely did $100 million in total sales last year. But Poppi’s Super Bowl ad was the most watched ad of the game. (WSJ)

JOE'S NEIGHBORHOOD
One more loss

By Joe Weeg

Jay Cox-Kozel, who owns the closing Back Country in Beaverdale, has been my personal dresser without those words ever
being uttered between the two of us.
The letter began well enough: “Dear friend.” Who doesn’t want to be a friend?

But then it quickly went south: “Back Country will be closing its doors for good in the next few month.”

Oof!

Aging is a little like playing that game where you take away blocks all stacked on top of each other. As each block is taken away, the structure sways but then hopefully holds. Knees, hips, ears, eyes all go by the wayside as you stand there swaying while the air blows through the gaps. But you wake up each morning finding yourself surprisingly still upright and wondering where you can get a cinnamon roll. See, you won.

Restoration as art: Top 10 Builder's Choice
McCulley crafts a car to perfection

By Debbie Mikelson

Jeff McCulley grew his craftsmanship into an artform over the years and understands that artisanship takes time when balancing work and family. He has worked 20 years in the custom car industry; however, finding time for his personal restoration project took five years to get from pieces to completion while raising twins. Jeff finished his black and white 1968 Plymouth GTX just in time to enter Goodguys Heartland Nationals 2024 in Des Moines this July. His reward? His car was selected for the Top 10: Builder’s Choice Award. It was a record year with 5,000 cars entered.

McCulley was proud to be recognized for his work but says he enjoys car shows mostly because of the people. The show included a cruise, and he says his wife, Abby, and his 6-year-old twins, Jack and Kate, enjoyed the event. When he first bought the car pieces in Illinois, the twins were only 3 months old.
