Good morning to you!

Welcome to the Friday mailbag where you will find some of the comments, questions and ideas sent recently by readers of this newsletter or our publications. They are edited for space and clarity.

“It would be great if you published the recipe of your tuna casserole (Forgotten foods, March 31, 2025). My wife hates tuna but I love it and would make it when she goes on her sister weekends so I could enjoy it a few times a year!” - Colin

Well, you are probably going to be disappointed, as it’s not really a casserole. It’s a box of macaroni and cheese and a can of tuna. But it makes me happy. - Shane

“Meatloaf, whether your mom used oatmeal or crackers as filler or layered in some pork (Forgotten foods, March 31, 2025). Plain old hot dogs, boiled in hot water usually, not even a bun but wrapped in Wonder Bread Or Hy-Vee white bread. Beef tongue made in a pressure cooker on the stove. I would boycott or be forced to try it but later would be allowed to sub out something easier as I would wait out my mom making me sit at the table till I ate the bovine (non) delicacy. La Choy Chow Mein from the can. God bless my mom, but she would boil the contents till it was mush, and the Chinese noodles did not help much. Tater tots from the bag. Fish sticks, a staple at hot lunches at school or Catholics during Lent on Friday. Mac and cheese — creamy, gooey mess, comfort food to the extreme level before it went designer. Grilled cheese or grilled peanut butter sandwiches. Fried fish, caught and frozen, bullheads, catfish, perch or blue gills.” - Rex

It all rings a bell, except La Choy Chow Mein. This meat-and-potatoes Iowa kid never experienced such things. - Shane

“Shane, your column on Tuesday (It’s hard to be humble, April 1, 2025) reminded me of one of my favorite scripture readings. From Luke 14:11: ‘For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.’ Thank you for starting my day every weekday.” - Steve

Some things in life are truly challenging. Being humble doesn’t need to be one of them. - Shane

“You left out the smell and noise (Bad neighbors, April 2, 2025). I never thought it was a problem until we lived in a townhouse. Coming home after a long day of work or sitting on your porch/patio and having the sweet smell of marijuana cascade through your nostrils is very relaxing. Some might say inviting, not me, though. I fall into the noise category, using tools in the garage and not being considerate of others. I need to be more cognizant of others' nap times I guess. Always a pleasure.” - Cheech

Smell and Noise. They were amazing in concert. - Shane

Have a fantastic Friday, and thanks for reading.

Mexico downsizes its children. The Mexican government moved to ban junk food in schools in late March in an attempt to reduce one of the world’s worst obesity rates and a diabetes epidemic. New health guidelines targeted sweet or salty processed foods common among schoolchildren, such as sugary fruit drinks, potato chips, artificial pork rinds and soy-encased, chili-flavored peanuts. Schools must gradually eliminate foods and beverages with even just one black warning label indicating high levels of salt, sugar, calories or fat. Such labeling on the front of packaging has been compulsory in Mexico since 2020. Forty percent of Mexican children’s total calorie intake consists of sugary drinks and highly processed foods and over one third are obese. DES MOINES FORGOTTEN
Animatronics and pizza

By Kristian Day

]Hell must have frozen over, because I am writing about ShowBiz Pizza. As a kid in the early 1990s, spending a birthday or two at a mall arcade blowing a pocket full of quarters on The Simpsons and Mortal Kombat was common. If you had even cooler parents, you had a birthday party at either Happy Joe’s or ShowBiz Pizza (and since Happy Joe’s is still around, we are excluding them for this story). ...

Meet Brooke Weir
Incorporating interactive lessons

By T.K. West

After graduating from the University of Northern Iowa, Brooke Weir worked in Cedar Rapids before relocating with her husband to the metro. Weir stayed home for a few years as their family transitioned and then worked for the Des Moines Public School District. Now Weir has joined the Southeast Polk Community School District. She teaches sixth grade math at the Middle School and is in her first year teaching with the district.

“Working with Southeast Polk is rewarding because of the opportunity to positively impact the community that I live in, support students and other educators, and help shape educational initiatives. There's something special about seeing the direct results of collaborative efforts in improving learning environments and outcomes for students,” Weir says.
