Good morning to you!

I would be awakened by the sound of the front door opening as Dad would grab the Sunday paper off the front step, the cool air temporarily drifting through our cozy, little home. The coffee pot would start churning, and I could hear the clicking of Dad’s lighter and the smell of his cigarette.

It was Sunday morning, and our pre-church ritual was beginning. I would grudgingly roll out of bed and join Dad at the kitchen table while we read the newspaper together. He spent his time with the main news. The full-color comic section was my choice.

The large “Family Circus” cartoon at the top was my first view. Billy, Dolly, Jeffy and P.J. — along with parents Bil and Thel and the family pets Barfy, Sam and Kittycat — were part of my extended family.

I would next turn to “Peanuts” to see what Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the gang were up to. And Woodstock. Don’t forget Woodstock.

“Marmaduke” was a favorite of mine as well. After all, who doesn’t love a big, clumsy dog?

Every kid I knew had a grumpy neighbor, and the annoyances of “Dennis the Menace” to Mr. Wilson seemed to bring a smile to my face. Too bad the TV show didn’t.

I tried to understand “Doonesbury,” but I didn’t. Skipped right by “Judge Parker,” too.

I wanted to like “Dick Tracy,” especially with that cool two-way radio watch, but I just couldn’t seem to connect.

I did enjoy “Blondie,” though. “Wizard of Id,” “Beetle Bailey” and “B.C.” were not on my A list, but I worked my way through those, too.

After perusing through the comics, I would search for my plastic egg of Silly Putty and put it to work, copying and stretching my favorite cartoon characters with that silicone polymer before rolling it into a ball and bouncing it off the wall a few times — until Dad raised his head from the world news and politely instructed me to knock it off.

I miss those Sunday rituals and the mental adventures into the creative minds of Bill Keane, Charles Schulz, Hank Ketcham, Brad Anderson, Johnny Hart and the others who brought so many smiles to the faces of kids (and adults) on Sunday mornings.

Have a wonderful Wednesday, and thanks for reading.

Woebegone Wednesday
Vietnamese shrimp have become poster children of the trade wars. Peter Navarro, embattled hard-core Senior White House Counsel, uses them to illustrate "non-tariff cheating barriers." He thinks Vietnam, which holds the third largest trade surplus with the U.S., is dumping cheap shrimp on the U.S. market. Louisiana fishermen agree. Personally, I am stuffing frozen shrimp into my freezer. (See deals today below.)

Garbage foods go literal. Just this year, at least a dozen companies’ products have been flagged as potentially containing what regulators often call “foreign objects,” according to notices posted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. That usually means metal, rubber and bits of permanent markers. (WSJ)

FILM REVIEW
Th-th… that’s (not) all, folks!

By David Rowley

“The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie”
PG | 91 minutes
Director: Peter Browngardt
Writers: Darrick Bachman, Peter Browngardt, Kevin Costello
Stars: Eric Bauza, Candi Milo, Peter MacNicol

The Warner Bros.-owned franchise began as a series of animated shorts that were released during the golden age of American animation between 1930 to 1969, and more than 1,000 episodes were released under Looney Tunes and spin-off banner Merrie Melodies.

Although no one director, writer or artist is ultimately responsible for the brilliant heights that Looney Tunes ultimately reached, key contributors obviously include Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng (this critic’s favorite cartoonists) and a stable of unsung gag writers and animators. ...

By Ashley Rullestad

Third grade teacher Brittany Mendlik graduated from UNI in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a minor in reading. Her career started at Center Point-Urbana Community Schools in eastern Iowa. During her time there, she obtained a master’s degree in teacher leadership and instructional strategies from Buena Vista University.

She credits her five years teaching at Center Point-Urbana with providing many lessons and challenges that helped her grow as a young teacher. After her husband started a new job with Hy-Vee Corporate last February, she began looking for a school district where she felt she could flourish.
