Good morning to you!

Imagine being a teenager and spending the bulk of one of your teenage years in another country where you didn’t know a single person, had never been to a single place, and could barely speak the language. For most teenagers — including me — that would have been unthinkable. Meanwhile, students from around the globe are foreign exchange students and are thankful for the memorable opportunities and lifelong friendships.

In our Iowa Living magazines during the month of April, we share the stories of local hosts of exchange students and how the experiences changed their lives.

As I read these stories, I could not help but think of Jone Helgeson, a foreign exchange student from Norway who was at my high school my senior year. I got to know Jone as we both ran on our high school cross country team. He took his running very seriously. I was there mostly to lose a few pounds before wrestling season. As such, he didn't fully appreciate the myriad of practical jokes I played on him during the season, most of which happened in the locker room, and I can’t write about them here.

I did share many of my favorite Norwegian jokes with Jone, though. My most favorite, and his least favorite, asked why Norwegians had bumps on the backs of their heads. The answer, of course, was because the toilet lid always hit them on the head when they would get a drink of water. “Stupid American jokes,” Jone would tell me.

What was stupid was the time I thought Jone should experience what it was like to go 125 mph on a county blacktop. Looking back, this clearly wasn’t a wise decision. Fortunately, we made our way through it safely. The look on his face? That was great. Jone having to change his underwear? Not so great.

When the winter season rolled around, Jone decided to join the wrestling team. He had never wrestled before, so this was entertaining in itself. The highlight of the season for him was an exhibition match our team had when he tied up with a foreign exchange student at a nearby school who was from France. It was a back-and-forth match, but Jone won, and he — and the crowd — went nuts. This was during the time when the “Rocky III” movie was in theaters, and Jone looked and acted the part of Rocky Balboa, at least a Norwegian version.

Jone became a good friend, albeit for a short time. I regret that we have not stayed in touch. I haven’t thought about him in years, but writing this column inspired me to reach out. And, of course, I asked, “Do you know why Norwegians have bumps on the backs of their heads?”

I am eagerly awaiting his reply.

Have a magnificent Monday, and thanks for reading.

French fries — shelter from the storm? One of the biggest winners during the stock market carnage of tariff era adjustments is Lamb-Wesson. Its stock rose during bear market days because of — wait for it — "The french fry attachment rate (FFAR)." That's industry speak for the percentage at which restaurant customers order fries with their sandwiches and entrees. The FFAR is higher than at any time in a decade, even going back years before COVID. Lamb-Wesson is the world's leading producer of frozen potato products. (Fox Business)

FEATURE STORY
Drake is winning

By Jim Duncan

Growing up in 1950s Des Moines, my family’s backdoor neighbor was an elderly German professor of Humanities at Grinnell College. Because our backyards were our baseball fields, we kids had several run-ins with the prof whenever we tried to retrieve foul balls from his fenced-in yard.

“Get out of my yard. I will turn on the electric current in the fence,” was often yelled with an ominous German accent, a typical result of such encounters. My father, who taught at Drake and served in World War II, kept an eye on our games from his kitchen window. One time the Grinnell prof caught me and yelled he was taking me to the police station. ...

1994: Violence erupts in Rwanda, foreshadowing genocide. On April 7, 1994, violence fuels the launch of what would become the worst episode of genocide since World War II: the massacre of an estimated 500,000 to 1 million innocent civilian Tutsis and moderate Hutus. Following the first wave of massacres, Rwandan forces manage to discourage international intervention with the murder of 10 Belgian peacekeeping officers. The Tutsis, a minority group that made up about 10 percent of Rwanda’s population, received no assistance from the international community, although the United Nations later conceded that a mere 5,000 soldiers deployed at the outset would have stopped the wholesale slaughter. ...
